The "al Baida massacre" III: Three Killings in February

October 16, 2011
last update Nov. 6

<< Behind the Scenes of An Al Qaeda Massacre {masterlist}

Here I'll consider together three described incidents from late February which share features but also differences. They could represent one, two, or even three seperate incidents of early rebel brutality in Libya's east.

"The al Baida Massacre"
One of these I've already covered in some detail, calling it (perhaps in error) the al Baida massacre. See Behind the Scenes of the al-Baida Massacre and developed further in The "al-Baida Massacre," Further Behind the Scenes.

In short, this was a massacre of 22 largely black men in military and civilian clothes, prisoners with bound hands, blindfolded and executed by gunshots to the head, laid out across some parking lot-type area inside a low-walled area.

It was said they had been killed by their commanding officers, or perhaps by African mercenaries, for refusing to fire on demonstrators. It might be true in a roundabout way - they failed to shoot all the attackers fatally, so the "protesters" got hold of them and they were then executed.

These 22 at least seem almost certainly to have been killed by their rebel captors - militant Islamists, by the look of it. A second video shows a nighttime session in some mosque, perhaps, where nine military/civilian prisoners are condemned to death. The match of one victim between the alive view and the dead view is perfect, and at least one other is a very strong match. As many as five others of the nine prisoners are consistent with one or another of the dead (two, one a teenager, are non-matches-apparently spared).

Airport Defender Executed
In a recent update to "Behind the Scenes," I finally mentioned the link to L'Abraq Air Base; according to a fairly credible video, the soldiers sentenced to die were captured at this airport just east of al Baida. Reportedly unarmed townspeople went there on the 18th to capture or kill the planeload of "African mercenaries" rumored to be arriving. Indeed, black soldiers were inside (all Libyan), and a somehow fierce battle ensued, which the people won in a matter of about two days.

Recall that the original claim was these 22 were part of 130 soldiers executed by the regime for refusing to massacre the people, and the video of captive officer (prisoner #6 here) singled out as their "emir" (commanding officer) and apparently among those killed. Then consider this excerpt from a June 1 UN Human Rights Council report [PDF]:
On 18 February, at the demonstrations [???] near Al-Abraq Airport (east of Al-Bayda town), the Commission received information that 11 persons were killed by security personnel of Khamis Katiba, including the Commander of Husein al-Jiwiki Katiba. According to several sources, the Commander was killed when he refused to shoot at demonstrators, and was shot as a result of his refusal to shot at demonstrators. Witnesses noted that an 11 year old child was shot in the head while sitting inside a house close to the place of incident.
The Khamis brigade came and killed "demonstrators" who soon (about Feb. 20) conquered the airport. They killed a little girl at her home nearby (she's elsewhere given as 8, 10, or 12, and killed in her bedroom at 3am), and killed the on-site commander for refusing to help in all this killing.

The 'killed by his own' story and the airport link hint at a relation.  But the date of the Husein al-Jiwiki commander's demise, the 18th, and the first appearance of the videos of the slain 22, Feb 23, are nearly a week apart. And the number of dead doesn't match. Only one that's given as military, one a girl, and the remaining nine - presumably those demonstrating. So this is apparently some other incident I'm happy to leave as murky for now.

The Makhtub Massacre?
Here's where it gets interesting again. Recall the rebel interrogator's obsession with identifying the commanding officer, or "emir," among the men to be killed. The Libyan government had this idea that Dernah in the east was declared an Islamic emirate, and the massacre video has been given as happening in Dernah (besides al Baida, Benghazi, and even Sirte).

I've never been able to locate a precise spot on Google maps that fits the video, allowing me to say which of these is correct. I mostly looked around al Baida and L'Abraq, but Wikipedia has some clues I should have found earlier, suggesting another town altogether:
A group of 15 to 22 Libyan army soldiers captured in Darnah were reportedly executed in the village of Makhtuba, 20 kilometres (12 miles) east of Darna. According to a widely circulated story, the men were claimed to have been "executed by their own officers for disobeying orders".
The number of dead and claimed story match enough it was well-worth looking into. The source for this claim was an article I somehow missed before: "A rebellion divided: spectre of revenge killings hangs over eastern Libya." Graeme Smith, Globe and Mail, April 1. It's behind a paywall, but there are readable re-posts like this.

Smith wrote, apparently from rebel sources, how "a group of 22 soldiers" broke out from the airport, and drove through "the rebels’ barricades near the airport on Feb. 23." In three pickup trucks, the fighters "raced down the highway that winds down the cliffs toward Darna, blasting their way through a rebel encampment along the way." They killed two rebel fighters, the story goes, and others there called ahead to Dernah. The roads in do really twist, so they'd have a while to prepare. Smith reports on their response:
Locals say that a rebel commander named Abdul Hakim Al-Hasadi organized an ambush near the outskirts; the 45-year-old had quickly become a prominent figure among the rebels because of his expertise in guerrilla warfare, which he received at training camps in Afghanistan from 1999 to 2002. (In an earlier interview with The Globe and Mail, Mr. Al-Hasadi declined to say who operated his training camp; al-Qaeda ran camps in the same part of Afghanistan during that period.)
Mr. Hassadi's involvement is interesting. He's since admitted to being an al Qaeda member, albeit one who disapproved of 9/11 and felt America was getting less evil with its assistance to their cause in Libya. He's gone on to lead the fight in Dernah (along with fellow Afghan AQ member Sufyan bin Qumu). Later, al-Hassadi allegedly sailed to Misrata to lead the besieged city's rebel fighters, who would eventually be known for their bravery and relentless brutality in Tawergha, Tripoli, Sirte, and elsewhere.

Back in late February... Smith continues with a story full, like the roads into Dernah, of twists and turns:
The rebels caught all 22 soldiers and started transporting them in pickup trucks back to Darna; although seven leapt from the back of the trucks they were recaptured the next morning in a neighbouring village. The remaining 15 arrived at the central mosque in Darna, where a large crowed gathered and called for their execution.
What's interesting is the divided response to these captives. While the militants and the "angry mob" wanted to off them, other locals were willing for whatever reason to shelter the attacking soldiers. A veterinarian who joined Darna’s rebel council told Smith “We were screaming, ‘Please don’t do this.’ My own cousin was killed at the airport, but I’m a Muslim and I must respect the prisoners of war.”
Mr. El-Magri said a group of educated men tried to shelter the prisoners inside the mosque and planned to disperse them among safe houses with families in the city. Most of them were bundled into vehicles and kept away from the mob, he said, but men in the crowed snatched one of them from the back of a pickup truck. He saw them hang him with rope from a green pedestrian bridge near the mosque.

Families that sheltered the prisoners that night remain afraid to speak to the media, fearing retribution. Abdel Gadir, 29, said one of his friends took in a group of prisoners and soon found it difficult to keep them. “His door alarm rang in the middle of the night,” Mr. Gadir said. “Men with guns were in the road with covered faces. They told him, ‘Give us those criminals.’”

The masked men took away the prisoners. The next day, Mr. Gadir said he returned home in the evening to his village of Makhtuba, 20 kilometres east of Darna, and found his neighbours upset. They had discovered a pile of bodies, apparently executed with gunshots, at a nearby crossroads known as Hisha.

“My friend said, ‘Our revolution has taken a wrong turn,’” Mr. Gadir said. “Each of the bodies had a bullet in the head.”
Comparing the Makhtub Massacre and the al Baida Massacre
The mosque where the main 15 were taken could be the scene of the famous interrogation video (with six prisoners unseen). That occurred at night, and the videos of all 22 already dead were online and being reported about on the 23rd (See SaveLibya's posting). So if this is the same incident with no timeline fudging, they must have been captured at about midnight or one AM on the 23rd, the escapees found and sentenced before the sun rose, and all 22 killed swiftly thereafter.

The details of this story also fail to account for the two capitives at least that clearly are not among the dead (prisoners 2 and 4). The original pool had to be at least 24, even if none of the others were spared.

Smith's version, gathered as it was from locals of different viewpoints, has strength to it. But the story of the initial capture is especially prone to distortion. The airport had fallen by Feb.20, so what 22 soldiers were still holed up inside to "break out" and go on the attack, semi-justifying their execution, three days later? Making this the story's beginning makes Hassadi out to be a defender, aside from a war criminal, but it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

That detail and the given date of capture aside, I'd consider it more likely these passive, stunned-seeming young men were just taken captive as the airport was seized on about the 20th, and killed somewhere in the next day or two before the cover story was finalized, and the video released, on the 23rd.

On the visual location search - often when things come together, they all start to. I'll look at satellite imagery and find a match, and things will just crystalize. But even narrowing it down to tiny Makhtub (given as Matruba on Google maps) still gives no obvious match. There's no sign the area of filming was at a crossroads, nor that it wasn't near one. And finally, splayed out in a walled area isn't the same as piled at a crossroads.

So in the end, I can't simply reconcile these as the same incident, nor shake the feeling they might be. What we have in this still-connected disconnect is either:
- two separate rebel atrocities of 22 victims each, in that area, on about February 23.
- the same incident told in multiple conflicting ways, left scrambled and indecipherable.

  1. I just noticed a bit in the Time World article by Abigail Hauslohner in Shehat (Cyrene), 23 Feb 2011 which you cited in a recent randi forum.

She writes in the ensuing chaos, a group of men from al-Baida executed 15 of the suspected mercenaries on Feb. 18 and 19 in front of the town's courthouse. They were hanged, says the country's former Justice Minister Mustafa Mohamed Abd al-Jalil (who has quit and joined the revolution). It wasn't entirely planned, but the people here were enraged.

She has urged the international community to support an investigation into the violence.

Loyalists have quit in protest at the brutal crackdown while fighter pilots have also defected after being ordered to fire on demonstrators.

A weeping resident of the Libyan town of Al Bayda has described how forces using aircraft and tanks killed 26 local people overnight, including his own brother, in the revolt against Muammar Gaddafi. [told by telephone to Reuters according to this source, where he added "This is genocide,” said Mahry, 42
Libyans are now "scared of their own shadows", said Marai Al Mahry, from the Ashraf tribe, who named his dead brother as Ahmed al Mahry. (This seems to be the only reference to Marai Al Mahry anywhere.)
"This is worse than anyone can imagine, this is something no human can fathom," he told Reuters.
"They are bombing us with planes, they are killing us with tanks" he said, sobbing uncontrollably as he appealed for help.
Mr Mahry accused forces loyal to Mr Gaddafi of indiscriminate killing on the streets of the coastal town, which lies east of Benghazi.

The Mahrys just vanish from the internet, his job done.

So what happened to the UNHCHR investigation? Where are the photos or videos of tanks and planes killing people?

  3. Libya Herald reporter Ashraf Abdul-Wahab has interviewed Yasser Ben Halim, the head of Tripoli Military Council’s Protection Force Unit.

    A) Plans were in place from 14 February. We were chased by the internal security service and were even shot at but, thanks be to God, no one was hurt. We had all agreed to set off from the mosques, though which we coordinated with area residents.
So on Friday, we went out immediately after prayers and headed for all security departments in the city. We took control of them. We were also joined by the police force and guards.

That lasted for about four hours, then we headed for Al-Beyda where there was one of Qaddfi’s brigades called Al-Jareh. We managed to overpower them. After that we went to Benghazi — that’s where the real battle started. Some of us were injured and some were killed. From that point on, we all continued with the revolution until the whole of Libya was finally liberated.

    94. Medical sources and forensic specialists in Al-Bayda mentioned that the vast majority of those killed were shot in the upper part of their bodies.

They estimated that 80% had been shot in the head and another 10% had been shot in the chest, neck, or mouth.

According to the same sources, the vast majority of those killed were shot with only one bullet.

This find occurred on February 21, right after "protesters" there had burned to death five innocent men from Chad. That's 27 so-called mutinous soldiers executed. The oher 103 we just don't know the details, but the patterns illustrated so far do not line up with what the rebels asserted.

BAIDA, LIBYA - The young men of this idyllic town nestled in the Green Mountain region of eastern Libya took control here in a days-long battle. First they fought their way into a security camp protected by 2,000 mercenaries and other forces loyal to the government of Moammar Gaddafi. Then they took over the streets

At least 90 civilians have been killed in the 10-mile stretch from Baida to the town of Shahat, according to doctors and witnesses.
In just one neighborhood, there have been 17 funerals, including one Wednesday.

Now, everyone is armed. The police stations and other government buildings have been burned,

Outside the local parliament building in Baida, once controlled by Gaddafi's revolutionary committee Mustafa Abdel Jalil was among those who had gathered here. Only three days ago, he was Gaddafi's justice minister. He resigned Sunday to protest the "coldblooded" killings of civilians by "tanks, bombs, bullets and mercenaries," he said.

Just days ago, the picture was far different, with bloody battles in the streets. On Wednesday, spent ammunition from rifles and antiaircraft weapons littered the streets. Fresh blood stained the ground.

Residents said mercenaries flown in from other parts of Africa had gone on a killing rampage.

The town's young men reacted with grief, and with rage.

One man took a tractor and broke down the walls of the Kitab security base in Shahat, where mercenaries were housed, witnesses and participants said. In a battle that lasted a day and a half, the residents overwhelmed the forces, killing some and taking others hostage. The captives are being held in secret locations throughout the area.

      85. The Commission has concluded that the Government’s reaction, in seeking to repress the demonstrations, involved the use of lethal force and that in the early days of the protest there was little evidence to suggest that the protestors were engaged in other than peaceful assembly.

      98. The Commission has not been able to determine if all participants in the demonstration were unarmed. However, from the information it has received, together with the videos and photos it has examined, it considers it likely that in the early days of the protest, the protestors were engaged in peaceful assemblies

Thus, most Americans believe that Qaddafi was a mad man, a terrorist, had a terrible human rights record, that his people lived in poverty while he lived a lavish life style, that he bombed a discotheque in Berlin, and put a bomb on board Pan Am Flight 103 that exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland.

No one questioned the claims that later were proved to be false that there had been mass protests in Libya that had resulted in indiscriminate killing of civilians by Libya’s defense forces.

The truth is that right out of the gate there were well-armed rebels attacking government barracks in Benghazi (pop. 325,000).

The government initially ordered its troops not to fire back.

But as the attacks persisted and it became evident who these “rebels” were, the loyalist forces had no choice but to defend themselves and the nation.

It was a Pakistani newspaper that alerted readers to the build-up of planes, ships, tanks and troops that was taking place in the southeast section of Libya in the months prior to the start of the attacks.

Islamist gunmen have stormed a military arms depot and a nearby port in Libya and seized numerous weapons and army vehicles after killing four soldiers, a security official says.

The group also took several hostages, both soldiers and civilians, and is "threatening to execute them unless a siege by security forces is lifted" in Al-Baida, the official told AFP on Sunday, asking not to be named.

"This criminal gang assaulted an army weapons depot and seized 250 weapons, killed four soldiers and wounded 16 others" in the Wednesday operation in Derna, which lies east of Al-Baida and 1300km from Tripoli.

"Army Colonel Adnan al-Nwisri joined them and provided them with a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, three pieces of anti-aircraft artillery and 70 Kalashnikov" assault rifles, the source said.

On Friday, he said they attacked the port in Derna and seized an assortment of 70 military vehicles.
It was not immediately clear who the civilians were or where they had been taken hostage.

The official said the same group was responsible for the hanging of two policemen in Al-Baida on Friday that was reported in Oea newspaper....

The group calls itself the "Islamic Emirate of Barqa" after the ancient name of a region of northwest Libya, and the official said its leadership is made up of former al-Qaeda fighters previously released from jail.

He said he and his fellow prisoners, along with hundreds of other people, were asked to attend a pro-Qaddafi rally in Tripoli last week, and then were put on a plane.

According to some protesters, Younis, a longtime Benghazi resident, granted safe passage out of the city to loyalist troops escaping the Katiba.

As anti-regime forces gained access to the interior of the base, they saw evidence of the troops' divided loyalties.
Elements of three units had been stationed there to quell the uprising: The Fadheel brigade, out of Sitre; the Khamis brigade, from Tripoli; and the Tariq brigade, which was based in the southern town of Sabha.

Some soldiers in the Fadheel brigade, Omran said, were from Benghazi or had familial connections there and refused to fire on the protesters.

A dozen or more of them were shot to death by their fellow soldiers, he said.

Protesters would later discover the severely burned bodies of soldiers inside the Katiba, their hands tied behind their backs.

  25. Toyota cars : 20th February, 2011 , Benghazi

2006/ these cars have been brought to the youngsters who were born in the debut year of Qaddafi as a Libyan leader (1-9-1969), to his close friends and relatives through certain links, but were stored and neglected till the revolution because of raised differences upon how they should be distributed and because they were supposed to be “Toyota”labeled.

These cars were stored in different Libyan cities with estimated numbers of 3000 in Benghazi, 5000 in Misrata and Tripoli. **

However, back in the summer of 2010,upon my visit to Misrata, I located the left-over cars still packed up under dust and sun for over a year in a certain youth center which appeared back then to be their final destiny.)

    *
On 20th February, 2011, upon the emancipation of Benghazi, fleeing soldiers because of grenades and tearing down Qadaffi’s camp wall (which was located in the middle of the city) using heavy artillery,
a group of people headed to a Chinese cars warehouse in a suburban area there, used the cars to track down the escaped soldiers and to enclose the city.

Starting from here, these cars were used for facility preservation purposes.

After the first spark of the Libyan liberation, the idea of equipping cars with artillery was established.

One day, I heard an emergency appeal over the local radio to hand in these cars to be used to break free civilians who were enrolled in training camps.

Being a pioneer in using heavy artillery, I took the initiative of equipping the car and placed an iron base with fixed rocket launchers (which was a plus point in comparison to the other rioters), ammunition boxes in addition to two passengers!

    Sincerely Yours,Saad Sati :

Before I go into details, I would like to introduce myself. I have been a political activist against the Libyan regime since 2005. Despite the fact of subsequent control over the internet connection through a high technology French company, I was able to carry out my mission through blogs, emails and coverage of events the moment they happen in the country.

As a result of the major success of both Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions, I have decided (specifically on 17th February, 2011) to join –through Facebook- the Libyan people and fight for their cause to overthrow the Libyan tyrannical regime.

  26. HISHAM BUHAGIAR: We saw the cars coming with a lot of soldiers.

    They started shooting immediately.

I saw two people were shot, one of them in the head, was two meters away from me.

I saw even one machine gun that’s mounted over a truck that was used to fight aircraft.

That was used against the demonstrators.

SARAH ABDURRAHMAN: Hisham was able to protect his communications but not himself.

On February 25th he helped organize a peaceful demonstration after Friday prayer.

He decided to talk to the police outside the mosque first.

HISHAM BUHAGIAR: I was talking to the police in a nice soft voice, and their reaction was astonishing. They took the shotgun and immediately they shot at me. I was – I was really shocked, eh?

SARAH ABDURRAHMAN: Hisham needed surgery, so he hopped the last commercial flight out of Tripoli, ending up in Belgium.

That’s when I finally learned who he was, not a stranger, practically an uncle. He sent me a photo.
SARAH ABDURRAHMAN: It was a picture of you in Seattle, in probably 1985, at a picnic, and you were holding me.

    HISHAM BUHAGIAR: Yeah.

Could defectors do it ? there are billions of dollars at stake.

It is important to note that little of the territory that fell into rebel control in the early days of the insurrection was actually occupied through conquest. Many military and security forces in the east either deserted or defected to the opposition, which brought not only men and arms, but also the territory those troops ostensibly controlled. /stratfor

The Omar Mukhtar brigade commander was Abdelmonem Mukhtar Mohammed, a man with long experience in the armed opposition movement known as the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group who had also spent time in Afghanistan and had met Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Two videos seen by the Commission show a group of men, most in military uniform of the type worn by Qadhafi forces, being aggressively interrogated by unidentified men regarding their use of force against anti-Government protesters. The second video shows the same group dead lying face down on the ground, with hands tied behind the back. Many were shot in the head.

It is important to note that little of the territory that fell into rebel control in the early days of the insurrection was actually occupied through conquest. Many military and security forces in the east either deserted or defected to the opposition, which brought not only men and arms, but also the territory those troops ostensibly controlled. /stratfor

  56. [wednesday]16 feb 2011 Islamist gunmen have stormed a military arms depot and a nearby port in Libya and seized numerous weapons and army vehicles after killing four soldiers, a security official says.

Two days earlier, on 16 February, it was also reported that Islamist gunmen, with the help of a defecting army colonel, stormed an arms depot in Derna and seized 250 weapons and an assortment of 70 military vehicles. During the raid four soldiers were killed and 16 wounded.[15] By the end of 18 February, the only place that still housed a significant number of Gaddafi loyalists in Benghazi was the Katiba compound.

On February 17, at the beginning of the revolution, one of the first buildings that demonstrators stormed in Benghazi was the headquarters of the Revolutionary Committees. They razed it.
The Revolutionary Committees (al-lijan al-thawriyah) are Gaddafi’s die-hards. The rebels — with vital support from Coalition air strikes — drove Gaddafi’s militias away from Benghazi and pacified the city after several days of street fighting. The few remaining Revolutionary Committee members — those who hadn’t yet surrendered or been killed — melted away again. Sociologist

18th February 2011 Amer Saad, a political activist from Derna, told al-Jazeera: “The protesters in al-Bayda have been able to seize control of the military airbase in the city and have executed 50 African mercenaries and two Libyan conspirators.

Even in Derna today, a number of conspirators were executed. They were locked up in the holding cells of a police station because they resisted, and some died burning inside the building.”

The "mercenary" hype in Libya is already causing attacks on Africans.
A Turkish construction worker told the 'BBC': "We had 70-80 people from Chad working for our company. They were cut dead with pruning shears and axes, attackers saying: 'You are providing troops for Ghaddafi.' The Sudanese were also massacred. We saw it for ourselves."

In fact, it did start like that. The true colours of the rebels were made clear on the second day of the rebellion, February 18th, when they rounded up and executed a group of fifty African migrant workers in Bayda.
A week later, a terrified eyewitness told the BBC of another seventy or eighty migrant workers chopped to pieces in front of his eyes by rebel forces. These incidents – and many others like them - had made clear the racist character of the rebel militias well before his BBC interview on March 15th

On Friday, at the Benghazi revolutionary committee's first press conference,
Peter Bouckert, the emergencies director of Human Rights Watch who is part of a two-person team in the city, said that the opposition's claims are justified.
He estimates that at least 300 people died violently in Benghazi during the uprising,
based on actual body counts from hospitals and morgues. "

According to Saudi-owned satellite channel, Al-Arabiya, last February four planes with mercenaries took off from Benin and landed to Benghazi in order to help Gaddafi.[10]

Air Force Major Rajib Feytouni said he had personally witnessed
4,000 to 5,000 mercenaries flown into his air force base on Libyan military transport planes since 14 February— several days before the uprising started.

“They (the planes) had 300 men at a time, all of them coming out with weapons.
They were all from Africa: Ghanaians, Kenyans,” he is quoted in the Guardian.

      This was confirmed on Thursday
by Col Gaddafi’s former Chief of Protocol Nouri Al Misrahi
in an interview with the Al Jazeera broadcasting network.

Ibrahim Dabbashi, Libya's deputy UN ambassador, who has turned against the Gaddafi regime, said Ethiopians were among the mercenaries that that came in support of the Libyan leader[3].

One witness, who did not want to be named, told the BBC:
"A couple of people in the crowd started chanting anti-government slogans and the crowd took that on.

"But then there were clashes with pro-government supporters and then after a bit the pro-government supporters dispersed and then the security services arrived and they dispersed the crowds with hot-water cannons."

Footage purporting to show the unrest, with protesters fleeing gunfire and a man being shot, was later posted on the internet and used by the BBC and other news organisations.

However, subsequent inquiries suggested this was footage originally uploaded more than a year ago.
