<< See-Through Salem: Dr. Salem al-Farjani Or, What Ever Became of Dr. Rajub?
UN
By November 2 at the latest, our missing persons and massacres expert, Dr. Salem al Farjani, was the acting chairperson of the National Missing Persons Commission. On this day, none other than UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon visited the shed massacre site, and his tour guide was Dr. al Farjani. He deciphered for him the large-scale Gaddafi regime massacre he has now been caught lying, and apparently helping others lie, about having witnessed. From a UN press release:
The Secretary-General then visited a mass-grave site near the capital and met with the survivors and families of victims of a massacre that had been carried out by the Khamis Brigade
[...]
After being briefed on the incident in the warehouse by Salem al Ferjani, the acting Chairperson of the National Missing Persons Commission, the Secretary-General told the group he was profoundly shocked by what he had seen and heard. He said the perpetrators of all such human rights crimes should be brought to account. [UN]
Hopefully he'll get another shock soon. One photo linked at the PR shows about ten of these survivors Moon met, none of whom looks obviously familiar from the August batch. Another UN photo shows al Farjani himself, full body, standing with Moon inside the warehouse his alter-ego had visited at least once.
We see here that he's not tall, perhaps a bit leaner than before, and sporting the beginnings of a nicely gray beard. This, as we'll see, was the start of his new, famous-and-not-quite Dr. Rajub look, along with always pointing his chin down, eyes up at militia commanders and Koreans alike. It's apparently the chin he's trying to hide more than anything.
I found an account of Moon's visit from the other side at the Facebook page of the association of holocaust survivors of Yarmouk. Google translated from the original Arabic (goofy parts intact):
I found an account of Moon's visit from the other side at the Facebook page of the association of holocaust survivors of Yarmouk. Google translated from the original Arabic (goofy parts intact):
...the delegation to listen to the survivors of the Holocaust on how to get the crime. The Alovdayda to listen to the demands of the families of the victims and survivors, which was applied material and moral support by UN agencies to the affected people. He also asked the people to open the tomb, which buried the bodies were burnt with the support of the UN discernible DNA samples where it is difficult discernible such samples. Students as well as urban residents unzip frozen funds for the benefit of the Transitional National Assembly in order to be compensation for the victims of crimes of Gaddafi. [any money if it was a TNC crime and these people aren't the real victims?]
Dr. Salem has Ferjani arranging to meet the delegation of the UN victims' families and survivors. And Dr. Salem with Mr. Secretary-General in this regard and has toured the scene of the crime and informed him of what happened in the prison.
The Association thanks all of the Delegation of the United Nations as well as the delegation of the National Commission to identify the bodies [Dr. Salem] and tracing of his interest in this subject.
ICC
An excellent find from contributor Felix will start the other half:Dr. Salem al Farjani, left, and Luis Moreno-Ocampo, right (Nov. 23, 2011) |
The description says:
The International Criminal Court's (ICC) chief prosecutor visited a military base on the outskirts of Tripoli on Wednesday (November 23) where the charred remains of 53 people were found after the fall of Tripoli to rebel fighters.
Luis Moreno-Ocampo, who is visiting Libya for talks with authorities after the capture of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, met families of those killed by loyalists of Muammar Gaddafi at the Khamis 32 military base.
Moreno-Ocampo said the ICC was still investigating the alleged crimes committed by Saif al-Islam and other members of the former regime.
"We are still investigating, that's why I'm here. We are still investigating the crimes and eventually, if there are no security problems, we can pass to them everything we have. Because, in fact, many of them, as today, they are helping us to collect the evidence. So I think it's important to understand for Libya this is crucial, and for our rules, they can do it. But of course all is subject to the ICC judges' authorisation," Moreno-Ocampo told reporters after seeing some of the charred remains.(skin perhaps, and other charred debris, not the actual bodies, which were removed almost three months prior)
Dr. al Farjani isn't named nor undeniably recognizable here, except in his spot at Ocampo's right side in that charred old shed, like when Moon visited. But this is the first time we can do any voice verification. It's very brief, and he has his back to the camera, just outside the shed. He says the families want the truth about the massacre, and survivors too, and he says it in the exact voice of "Dr. Salim Rajub" speaking in English to Sky News about actually hearing and seeing it happen. And it's probably the voice of "Ahmed al Farjani," the construction worker who sheltered escapee Atiri, right before "Dr. Rajub" brought Atiri to Sky News with him, standing on his right side.
Recall that Dr. Salem told Sky News the ICC and Moreno-Ocampo needed to investigate this Loyalist crime, and the witness he coached, Mustafa el-Hitri, says he saw Khamis personally walk into the compound and give some kind of order just before the massacre.
A Profile Article and Human Rights Consultations
Then there was a December AP article publicizing Dr. al Farjani and his struggle, and his help to Physicians for Human Rights to understand the crime (forthcoming ...) If he's nominated for a nobel prize or some such for his work exposing the "holocaust," that too will be added here.
For now, see the AP article and my post on the PHR report he advised on.

Thanks, that's interesting. It's nothing new, except in the publishing there. It's a simmered-down version of the Nov. 30 Gera piece where the similarity to "Dr. Rajub" was least clear, but where Eddie saw it anyway. That they chose to finally run it only now, where their odd piece about "Salim" can be found, and then all our stuff a Google search away, might be fortuitous.
ReplyDelete@Adam - is this the photo you referred to from the press conference over the "camel bones"? [Salim al-Furjani] Notice same spelling as in the Sheikh in Yarmouk

Great work, Caustic, on that perp Bashir. I wondered if he was with Ocampo on Nov 23 but no such luck. However, did you notice the strange floor marker around 0.11 in that ITN Salem - Ocampo video? Also, around 0.30, Salem intercedes on behalf of a man with greying beard, no doubt a plant, to the left of Salem, saying "he want to know the fate of his son(s?) whether he's(?) killed here or survivor(s?)" Ocampo replies something like "Can you record the bodies?"

Thanks Petri - I notice that there is a barely audible simultaneous translation in English in the background of the Ban Ki Moon video. The two mature men either side of Bashir (wonder if Bashir also gave witness, I bet he did...) seem to be retelling their stories, prompted by Salem. The first seems to mention blindfolding twice and name checks Bashir at one point.A translation would be informative.
DeleteSome additional photos of Salem with Ocampo on this associated daylife page
DeleteI am also looking for footage and photos relating to the visit of the UN Envoy to Libya appearing at the Yarmouk shed, as noted in this piece in Jadaliyya, the ezine of the Arab Studies Institute ,
ReplyDeleteOn 21 November 2011, US Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, went to Tripoli to visit a warehouse that the Qaddafi regime had used as a prison and torture chamber (similar to those utilized by the United States and United Kingdom for their al-Qaeda “detainees” outsourced to Libya). She rightly called the warehouse “an atrocity committed by the Qaddafi regime, as it was collapsing.” But Rice said nothing about atrocities committed by NATO and/or Libyan rebels.
As ABC also reported, Rice visited a warehouse that was converted into a prison and torture room, calling it “an atrocity committed by the Qadhafi regime as it was collapsing.”
“The stench of death & cruelty was pervasive,” she tweeted.
While there Rice met with former prisoners and families of the missing and dead. [shepherded by whom, one wonders....]
Rice reported to the UN a week later: on her visit, in Tripoli, [to] two very important sites. One was the site of a major massacre committed by Qadhafi forces on the eve of their retreat from Tripoli, where over 100 people were killed by grenades and bullets and then their bodies burnt to death in a small warehouse no larger than the consultations room in which we were meeting. (the other site was a shanty town for between 600 and 1000 African migrants on the outskirts of Tripoli)
It would seem that there is none. Strange.

Very strange detail noted in Richard Spencer's piece 28 August, Daily Telegraph
The shed's inmates were certainly a motley collection. Mr Kabir was a casual labourer. Tucked in alongside him was a judge, Abdul Hadi Abusheiwa, arrested in May because of his ties to Mustafa Abdul Jalil, the head of the rebels' National Transitional Council.
He was released in July, but had returned to see what happened afterwards.
He [Khaled Kabir] pointed to the corner where inmates had been strung up to be whipped.
The survivor lists are so choppy/wavy/sliding :

Why is Hamsa here? "I was one of the prison guards who participated in the incidents at Abu Salim," he says. "I also took part in the shootings, at the command of Abdullah al-Senussi and the prison director. I didn't count how many people I killed. They gave us new weapons. I just fired." Hamsa speaks in the soft, monotonous voice of a man who has spent 16 years justifying his actions to himself.
Did he torture inmates? Gwaidar's eyes flit nervously back and forth. He tries not to look at Hamsa, and yet he can't help but look at his smiling face. "I always tried to be nice," says Hamsa. "I wasn't one of the bad ones. I don't remember having tortured anyone. If I did, I'm sorry."
Gwaidar gets a drink of water, sinks down onto the sofa and tries to look detached. "I forgive you," he suddenly bursts out.
"But you did commit torture! You tortured him!" says Khalil, barely able to control his fury.

Their first conversation is short. "Do you remember?" Gwaidar asks. Hamsa shakes his head. Gwaidar shows the prisoner his hands, but Hamsa stares at the floor. Gwaidar goes down on his knees, bends forward, holds his hands behind his back and then stands on tiptoe.
"This is what you did to me. This is how I was hanging for 10 days," he says loudly. Now Hamsa is looking at Gwaidar's wrists, which are encircled by a straight line, as if someone had tried to cut off his hands. "I knew that you would come to get me one day," he says. And then he starts to cry.

Once back in Libya, Belhaj said, he was kept in isolation and tortured by Libyan intelligence.
This is consistent with Clive Stafford Smith's description of an interrogation by Libyan intelligence agents of his client Omar Deghayes at Guantánamo Bay.
Stafford Smith wrote that the Libyan interrogators showed Deghayes pictures of two prisoners they identified as Sadiq and Sami Abu Munder, both of whom had clearly been badly abused.

Khalid al-Sharif
ReplyDeleteMunder, also known as Abu al-Munder al-Saadi or Abu Munthir, was the LIFG's chief strategist. He was also rendered to Libya in 2004.
A third Libyan detainee is Khalid al-Sharif, the LIFG's military commander, who stated in a March 2010 interview that he had been imprisoned by Americans at Bagram air base for two years and tortured by drowning, being suspended by his hands, and beating before being flown to Libya in April 2005.
All three were transferred to Abu Salim prison, where they took part in negotiating a "reconciliation" with the regime orchestrated by Saif al-Islam al-Qaddafi.
In September 2009, Belhaj, Munder, and Sharif, along with three other LIFG detainees at Abu Salim, issued a 417-page statement renouncing violence and denouncing al Qaeda. On March 23, 2010, they were released from prison.
In May 2011, former LIFG leader Noman Benotman told Reuters that Qaddafi's forces had rearrested Munder and Sharif in Tripoli.
Their current whereabouts are not known.
Three other LIFG members rendered by the United States are likewise unaccounted for: Mohamed Ahmad Mohamed al-Shoroeiya, aka Hassan Rabii; Mahdi Jawda, aka Ayoub al-Libi, and Majid Abu Yasser, aka Adnan al-Libi.

He too was freed from prison on August 21 following a four-month-long ordeal.
A chemical engineer trained in Ireland, Sherif was rounded up in March along with five brothers and several cousins.
Charged with promoting a bloodily suppressed uprising in the well-to-do Tripoli district of Fashloum, he was kept for six days in a cupboard-sized box, and for thirteen more in a ten-by-ten-foot steel container that was tilted at an angle, with no food for those inside, who sometimes numbered scores, and a plastic bottle for a toilet.

When he was finally taken for questioning, Sherif would be asked a question but told to wait before answering and then left, naked, blindfolded, handcuffed, and kneeling, for twelve hours at a time.
Yet he says he was lucky. Prisoners who dared bang on cell doors at Ain Zara, another facility where he was held,..
