The original article "Behind the Scenes of the Al-Baida Massacre" has been moved here.
"Al-Baida" wasn't necessarily the location, for one thing, which remains unsettled.
The Sub-posts:
Original article, first published March 30, 2011, as Behind the Scenes of the Al-Baida Massacre - one of the first articles plugged in as this site was started a month later.
Further Behind the Scenes - quick updates from April 30 - a transcript, some other things.
Al Baida Massacre III: Three Killings in February.
From October, the Al-Hassadi Al-Qaeda link and a location-Maktub-come into focus.
Report: Behind the Scenes of an Al Qaeda Massacre
(pretty slick cover at left, report forthcoming, no estimated due date).
Update Sept.20:
Still no report or even effort towards one. Sorry. There should be a more cogent summary of the stuff at the links above, but I'm swamped. However, since this post is getting plenty of views lately, let's take a look at some Al Qaeda / Islamo-nihilist atrocities happening in Syria more recently.
In Douma, near Damascus, the same kind of matching work between rebel captives and murky massacre victims yields fruit more brilliantly than it did here (luckier with abundance of clear visuals). Sixteen regime victims were found, throats slit, rebels said, around Aug. 17, 2012. Only six were clearly shown, and all match with six out of 16 known FSA captives. Those were last seen alive in a video shot by a rebel death squad from the neighboring town (Harasta). (the six seen dead marked here)
See here for the fuller explanation, mostly citing existing work but with a few additions from our own.
See also the expanded Syria page at the CIWCL site for more things relevant things done well.
Warning
Warning: This site contains images and graphic descriptions of extreme violence and/or its effects. It's not as bad as it could be, but is meant to be shocking. Readers should be 18+ or a mature 17 or so. There is also some foul language occasionally, and potential for general upsetting of comforting conventional wisdom. Please view with discretion.

Quite a few of these YouTube videos are no longer available. I am struck though by the similarity to this YouTube video posted by NadiTr on 23 February,. labelled Executed Soldiers - Sirt Libya (Refused to Kill their own People)
ReplyDeleteAh, never seen that. It's the same, Sirte is just silly. I've seen Benghazi, al Baida, and Dernah specified. I went with al Baida, but Dernah might be closer - one really good source mentions Makhtub, just SE of Dernah, and 22 soldiers. Still no clear location match in the satellite images that I found. An update is pending here, "behind the scenes." For a preview, hunt down a re-post of that article, and it gives the mastermind of their arrest, re-arrest after escape, and app. execution as Ibrahim al-Hassadi, our aQ Afghanistan fighter from Dernah!
ReplyDeleteSee also the same video as NadiTr uploaded the same day by brqnetwork video

Some of this is related to the al-Baida massacres. The locations are however mostly wrong.
ReplyDeletePatrick Cockburn: Don't believe everything you see and read about Gaddafi
The Independent, 26 June 2011
THE HRW REPORTS ARE REALLY PROPAGANDA SHOWS ….
Delete” Human Rights Watch has been documenting human rights violations in Libya since 2005, pressing the former Gaddafi government to halt an array of abuses, including torture, forced disappearances and political killings. During the uprising last year, we extensively documented war crimes committed by pro-Gaddafi forces across Libya, including in Misrata.”( almost of that documentationsAgainst Gaddafi ARE FAKE! )

A gruesome discovery at the base of the officially sanctioned "pro-government" Rafallah al Sahati Brigade after it was taken over by the Save Benghazi protesters.
ReplyDeleteAmong the dead were five soldiers; a sixth was seriously wounded. All the soldiers were found with their hands tied behind their backs and a gunshot to the head, medical sources said.
Libya says all unauthorized militias will be disbanded
By Ned Parker, Los Angeles Times, September 23, 2012
Other sources say the six soldiers were bodyguards of an officer of the regular Libyan Army kidnapped earlier.
A photo of the bodies from some TV screen capture is here.

Do members of the in february performed local councils wear these long dark coats?
In some misrata vids one can see a man with a long dark coat busy with shooting
Could that be :
Latif says he works a "shift" between noon and midnight before being replaced by a colleague who takes the weapon they share. The men here used to only have knives and an AK-47 for every 10 of them. Some only had a few cartridges to go with them. Now they have Belgian assault rifles brought in by boat from Benghazi.
http://freethoughtmanifesto.blogspot.nl/2011/04/misuratas-sniper-war.html
Before all this, Latif was a history teacher. He liked teaching, especially about the time of King Idris, who ruled the country before Gadhafi took over power in a 1969 coup.
The other snipers include a diver and an airplane mechanic.
Latif also studied for two years in the former East Germany, in Saxony's Bad Düben.

A pity that the german Der Spiegel has removed the photo reportage of the shooters more than a year ago

“If anyone remembers the first months of the revolution, Libya was a different country.
A different country from Gaddafi’s regime and a whole different country from now,” said Taha al-Barghati, whose cousin, Colonel Ahmed Mustafa al-Barghati, was gunned down outside the family home.
Everyone’s seen the hit list – Taha told me that six more of his family members are on it.
