<< Behind the Scenes of An Al Qaeda Massacre {masterlist}
This post will host this second CIWCL report when it's completed and published. Until then I hope it can gather some final details with a little research
It should be a quick report, a simpler incident than the shed massacre, and already mostly of it we'll need is on file at the posts linked from the masterlist (top link).
I think the cover is done, at left, of course.
Previously called here "the Al Baida massacre," based on vague location understandings, the new name is stronger as well as rhyming. The report will emphasize the apparent Al-Hassadi - and thus Al Qaeda - link. It's a clear link, not even via an affiliated group - he used the training he got from Bin Laden's camps in Afghanistan to capture and execute these soldiers trying to defend their country.
What Needs Gathered
Nothing's really needed at this point, but there are surely some loose ends to be found about, and I will, but if others can help...
The location is one thing I personally gave up on. The Hassadi story has the massacre in or around Makhtoub, just southeast of Dernah (Al Qaeda central, and Hassadi's base). Google maps link, given asMatruba I looked in and around that town , couldn't find. Shouldn'tbe hard, it's barely a town at all. Below are some stitched images and notes I made months ago to convey the compound interior and exterior, for anyone else who wants to take a crack at it. Can anyone even get the sunlight direction here to narrow down if this road is east-west (my best guess) or whatever?
It's a small walled area (walls about six feet high, cinderblock and concrete), with its wall just ten feet off a two-lane paved road. There's little else around, suggesting its a ways outside of whatever town. A dirt trail parallels the road on the opposite side. Scrub prolferates. The hazy weather and weak mid-day light mess up my tricks to establish directions. A few angled trees grow to the right of the entry way, and from a distance we can see three more spindly ones to the left as well. The inside is partly dirt and/or grass, but mostly concrete. It looks like an overly-marked parking lot, a confusing montage of white and yellow lines at odd angles suggesting a lot and a highway or runway were fused together. Inner buildings are only faintly discernable to the right side and the rear. Little else can be told.
some location possibilities ?

We had all agreed to set off from the mosques, though which we coordinated with area residents.
1. So on Friday, we went out immediately after prayers and headed for all security departments in the city. We took control of them. We were also joined by the police force and guards.
2 .That lasted for about four hours, then we headed for Al-Beyda where there was one of Qaddfi’s brigades called Al-Jareh. We managed to overpower them.
3. After that we went to Benghazi — that’s where the real battle started.
Hm, yes... that takes us on a vague journey by people of unknown relation to these events across half the country on unknown days. That's of course the opposite direction we need to go here. But hey, a first comment to start, thanks.
Delete(I don't think I'll be getting or needing much more for this simpler report, but what the heck)
It's just a friendly fighter of Dernah, this why I recall him here :
DeleteWhat they were trying to do is to establish justice.
For instance, a person whose been known for torturing and killing the Libyan people will be punished.
Q) Does this mean a person could be executed without trial?
A) Yes, without trial.
What will the court do for us! Will it give you your rights! The court will sentence the perpetrator to seven or eight years imprisonment and then he will be set free.
Do you know that we will be questioned by the martyrs on Judgment Day! They will say to us, “why did you not take back our rights on our behalf?”!
@ caustic , the place were the victims are murdered could be next to a barrack.
ReplyDeleteBut it is also possible that they were taken to a city or village with a smal gvt building ,
same as in vid below @ 1.42 and were slaughtered in the courtyard there:

Libyan official: U.S. drones seeking jihadists in Libya
DeleteThe U.S. flew drones for a while after the NATO intervention in Libya to monitor chemical and biological sites, US military officials tell CNN. But the officials would not comment on whether drone flights were ongoing.
The senior Libyan official said it would be bad if such a strike had occurred. He added that the Americans' use of drones in a surveillance capacity had been discussed at the top level of the transitional Libyan government.
As CNN has reported, Azuz is a senior al Qaeda operative and longtime close associate of the group's leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was dispatched to Libya from the tribal areas of Pakistan in spring 2011, according to several sources. There, he subsequently recruited fighters.
Azuz is a veteran jihadist who fought the Soviet-backed government in Afghanistan in the early 1990s, according to several sources. He later to moved to the UK, where he increasingly came on the radar screen of British security services for his radical recruitment efforts in Manchester. In the period after the July 2005 London bombings, he was detained in the Belmarsh high-security prison and placed under a Control order, according to the sources.
He left the UK in 2009 and traveled to the tribal areas of Pakistan, from where al-Zawahiri redeployed him to Libya to set up a bridgehead for the terrorist group, according to the sources.
According to one source, Azuz has dispatched men as far west as Ajdabiya and Brega in his attempt to build up al Qaeda operations in eastern Libya.
According to the senior Libyan official, five radical Islamist militant commanders are operating in the Derna area, with 200 to 300 men under their command in the camps.
Recently, Libya's grand mufti, Asadiq Gherayli, met with the five militant commanders, and four of them, including Azuz, agreed with the government terms not to carry out attacks.
Only one refused: Sufian bin Qumu (also known as Abu Faris al Libi), a released Guantanamo detainee who is believed to be operating a camp in the mountainous woods along the sea outside Derna.
Qumu, 53 is a Libyan jihadist who participated in jihad in Afghanistan in the early and mid-1990s and joined the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group in Sudan in the mid-1990s, where he worked as a truck driver for bin Laden's company, according to a detainee assessment compiled while he was at Guantanamo.
He subsequently moved to Pakistan and then to Afghanistan, during which time he left the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group and declared allegiance to the Taliban, according to the assessment. He was arrested in Pakistan after fleeing Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban and handed over to U.S. authorities.
The assessment described him as having a "long-term association with Islamist extremist Jihad and members of Al-Qaida and other extremist groups.

ReplyDeleteEx-Gitmo detainee training Libyan rebels in Derna
ReplyDeletehttp://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2011/04/ex-gitmo_detainee_tr.php
A former Guantanamo detainee who spent nearly six years in detention at Cuba is training Libyan rebels in the city of Derna, according to The Wall Street Journal's Charles Levinson.
Sufyan Ben Qumu (whose name has also been transliterated as Sofiane Ibrahim Gammu) was transferred from US custody to Libya in 2007.
Levinson reports that Qumu, who was imprisoned in Libya after his transfer from Guantanamo, was released by Qaddafi's regime as part of its reconciliation effort with Islamists in 2008.
However, press reports from August 2010 indicate that he was released last year. [See LWJ report, Libya frees ex-Gitmo detainee.]
Declassified files produced at Guantanamo point to Qumu's multiple ties to al Qaeda and the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), a known al Qaeda affiliate.
Qumu, according to The Wall Street Journal, is now "training many of [Derna's] rebel recruits."
Qumu serves as a rebel commander along with two other jihadists who also fought in Afghanistan.
One of the two is Abdul Hakim al Hasadi, who was briefly detained by the US in late 2001 before being turned over to the Libyan government. Al Hasadi's role in the Libyan uprising has been widely reported and, according to The Wall Street Journal, he "oversees the recruitment, training and deployment of about 300 rebel fighters from" Derna.

DeleteCol. Hamid Al-Hassi, commander of the Cyrenaica Supreme Military Council, made explicit the priorities of the forces:
“Even if we had to take over the oil fields by deploying our forces there or risk another war, we will not hesitate for the sake of Barqa.” (Associated Press, March 4)
http://pslweb.org/liberationnews/branches/la/reports/oil-rich-region-of-libya.html
On March 6, militia commanders and tribal and business leaders held the first “Congress of the People of Cyrenaica” near the city of Benghazi, where they elected a governing council.
At the head of the council is Ahmed al-Zubair Ahmed al-Sanusi, a direct descendant of King Idris—the pro-imperialist despot overthrown in 1969—and a member of the NATO-installed National Transition Council.
Mohammed Buisier, a Libyan-American who helped organize the Congress, said that semi-autonomy means that Cyrenaica will be in control of “housing, education and other things and would delegate national security, defense ... to the central government.” (Reuters, March 5)
Cyrenaica, or in Arabic, Barqa, stretches from the central city of Sirte to the Egyptian border. The region was home to King Idris, and not coincidentally, it is where most of Libya’s oil reserves are located.

DARNAH, Libya — Abdul-Hakim al-Hasadi first took up arms nearly 20 years ago to try to bring Islamic law to Libya. He studied under the Taliban in Afghanistan, and during last year’s uprising he led a local militia council here in a city famous as a cradle of Islamic jihad.
ReplyDeleteBut now Mr. Hasadi has refashioned himself as an eager politician running for local office, looking to the ballot box to promote his Islamic values. “There is no reason for weapons now,” he said. “Words are our weapons. Politics needs politics. It doesn’t need force.

He pleaded for acceptance, reminding callers of his years in isolation in Guantánamo Bay. “If I speak about it now, you will not hold your tears.”

One of the interesting and very neglected features of the current "humanitarian intervention" in Libya is the extent to which it implicitly buys into racialized nationalist myths produced on the ground in Libya, adopting them without question and thus without concern for context, with little in the way of a critical examination of the media manipulation and calculated spread of racial fear by the leadership of "the rebels."
ReplyDeleteIt is not a simple matter of the Libyan opposition showing signs of xenophobia -- if that were true, it would resent the involvement of North Americans and Europeans. Instead, this is a racially selective xenophobia, with a preferential option for Western (i.e., U.S. and European) intervention, and against the presence of "Africans" (code for Sub-Saharan, black Africans)

ReplyDeleteIN A drab villa down a rutted road in Ajdabiya, the key eastern town recaptured last weekend by rebels, sit two leading members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG).
In the past, the two men, both grizzled veterans of the 1980s jihad against the Soviets in Afghanistan, would have baulked at the prospect of an interview, let alone given their names or agreed to be photographed.
“Everything has changed now,” says Abdul Monem al-Madhouni, who wears a scarf in the red, black and green colours of the rebels’ flag over a striped shirt and slacks. “This is a new era and there is no need to hide anything.”
He and his companion, who gives his name as Abdullah Mansour, sit on the governing council of Libya’s foremost militant group.
Its members, one of the greatest threats to Gadafy regime since it was set up in the 1990s, run to the high hundreds.
The two, both of whom recently returned to Libya after years in exile, say they have permission from the 12-member LIFG council to give the interview and what they say reflects its position.
“We are with the people and we are supporting the people,” says Mansour when asked for the LIFG stance on the revolt against Gadafy’s rule.
“We have opened our hearts and our hands to all the Libyan people to work together to get rid of Gadafy.”

Could the anger been fuelled by starting to kill Arab country men? No, this job was after delegated to nato.
ReplyDeleteBut the racial card , black mercenaries from outside , attacking homes & women was the injection to get the people in a bestial, bloodthirsty , hysterical arousal.
It happened some years before in Zawya too :
a black man accused of raping a lady.
I've met such mob myself one time in Mecca, smoking a cigarette near the ladies toilet ,
1 man passing by and quickly calling 10 men of his group.I escaped by jumping inside the ladies room.
Looking at the vid with the citizens with the big blades I can imagine it could have been them who done it.
The second way of fueling the people was of course the helicopter story :
ReplyDelete‘The men in them were not from the Libyan army.
They entered Tajura and attacked all the people with machine guns.
They were shooting everywhere. Not just at the people in the streets but in their homes.
I saw lots of people die. There were 250 killed in just a few minutes.’
Two days later Mr El Mezoghi, who runs a food-importing business and has helped fund the uprising, says he witnessed further carnage, this time in Az Zawiyah, 30 miles away from Tripoli.
‘Again we were protesting peacefully, in the centre of the town, when two Toyota Landcruisers turned up with six black men, with scars down their faces.
‘The men opened fire again with machine guns.
This time about 40 were killed and 150 injured. It was another massacre.’
Last night, it was not possible to verify the details of the alleged atrocities.

Thanks never came across the Institute of Development Studies. Close links with the Guardian. (warning bells). Their website only mentions 70 per cent of its funding. (47pc UK Govt) CWN a very strange body. Are the two really connected? IDS Crisis watch doesn't seem to link to CWN

Before the ceasefire, however, a group of 22 soldiers who broke through the rebels’ barricades near the airport on Feb. 23 seem to have fared worse.
Residents say the soldiers climbed into three pickup trucks and raced down the highway that winds down the cliffs toward Darna, blasting their way through a rebel encampment along the way. Two revolutionaries were killed.
The surviving rebels called ahead to warn the city of an impending attack.
ReplyDeleteLocals say that a rebel commander named Abdul Hakim Al-Hasadi organized an ambush near the outskirts; the 45-year-old had quickly become a prominent figure among the rebels because of his expertise in guerrilla warfare, which he received at training camps in Afghanistan from 1999 to 2002. (In an earlier interview with The Globe and Mail, Mr. Al-Hasadi declined to say who operated his training camp; al-Qaeda ran camps in the same part of Afghanistan during that period.)

The rebels caught all 22 soldiers and started transporting them in pickup trucks back to Darna; although seven leapt from the back of the trucks they were recaptured the next morning in a neighbouring village.
The remaining 15 arrived at the central mosque in Darna, where a large crowed gathered and called for their execution.
Families that sheltered the prisoners that night remain afraid to speak to the media, fearing retribution. Abdel Gadir, 29, said one of his friends took in a group of prisoners and soon found it difficult to keep them.
ReplyDelete“His door alarm rang in the middle of the night,” Mr. Gadir said. “Men with guns were in the road with covered faces. They told him, ‘Give us those criminals.’”
The masked men took away the prisoners.
The next day, Mr. Gadir said he returned home in the evening to his village of Makhtuba, 20 kilometres east of Darna, and found his neighbours upset.
They had discovered a pile of bodies, apparently executed with gunshots, at a nearby crossroads known as Hisha.
A local mullah organized a team of men and a backhoe to bury the corpses, he said.
None of them were willing to talk about the incident on Friday, although a freshly heaped pile of earth remains at the crossroads in the barren scrubland.
Graffiti scrawled on a nearby wall marks the spot as a resting place for soldiers “killed by Gadhafi,” an explanation repeated by some others in Darna.
They claim the executed men were killed by their own officers for disobeying orders.

Rebels also set fire to the police station they overtook , burning about 15 migrant workers alive
Later on, wonder if these people are still alive?
