The Sirte Massacres: The Mass Grave / Tallying the Dead

January 2, 2012

<< The Sirte Massacres

The final fall of the Gaddafi-led resistance, the final "liberation"of Libya and the widely-heralded start of a fresh new chapter there, only was declared upon the still-murky capture and murder of Muammar Gaddafi on October 20. This itself happened amid the culmination of Rebel/NTC/al Qaeda barbarity that rode shotgun on NATO-enforced "Humanitarian" intervention. Let us now take a look at the bloody climax in Sirte of the effort to, as was first explained, "avert a bloodbath in Benghazi."

Past the intro, I'm not ready to tackle this post. I will soon be copying over the info I already have published on the mass grave(s) of hundreds of victims of the city's final liberation. The various reports, changing number of those interned, the gruesome photos of many of them, the clues held therein, etc.

In the meantime, if anyone has anything they think I might not, feel free to leave it in a comment, and save me some time.

NTC is burying around 300 of the rebel fighters’ victims in a giant mass grave.

Many of the bodies still have their hands tied behind their backs, making the gunshots to the head all the more grim.

The mass grave is just part of the story, and the local cemetary has collected 572 bodies overall. All of them were reported as “mercenaries” by the rebel fighters, though again many of them were summary executions.

    1. By 26 October, it was reported that the bodies of 267 executed loyalists had been found across the city.[19]

The nearly 300 bodies were all buried in several mass graves around Sirte.

Another 572 loyalists, who were killed during the fighting, were reportedly buried in a local cemetery.[18]

SIRTE The bodies of more than 250 people who are believed to have been supporters of ousted Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi have been found in Sirte, a local newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The 267 bodies were found in recent days in the city of Sirte and its suburbs, according to the Quryna newspaper which cited Red Cross sources.

It said most of the victims were people loyal to the regime of Gaddafi, who was captured and killed near Sirte last week.

The sources told the newspaper that the bodies were counted and photographed by transitional authorities before they were buried in mass graves near Sirte.

Quryna reported that many of the victims appeared to have been executed.

The news comes less than a week after 53 decomposing bodies were found in the garden of the Mahari Hotel in Sirte.

On a recent afternoon, Mahmoud Zarog Massoud, his hand swollen with an infection from a wound, wandered the broken shell of a seven-story apartment building in Surt, which was struck in mid-September.
His apartment furniture had been blown about by the blast.
He approached the kitchen, where, he said, he and his wife had just broken their Ramadan fast when ordnance hit. “We were not thinking NATO would attack our home,” he said.

  4. I remember during the “Libyan Revolution”, the tally of casualties resulting from Gaddafi’s crackdown on protesters was being reported by the mainstream media with such a “dramatic” fervor that it hardly left the public with a moment to at least second-guess the ensuing avalanche of unverifiable information and erratic inflow of “eye witnesses” accounts.

Yet the minute NATO forces militarily intervened and started bombing the country into smithereens, the ceremonial practice of body count on our TV screens suddenly stopped; instead, reporting of Libyan casualties (of whom there were thousands thanks only to the now infamous UNSC resolution 1973) turned into a seemingly endless cycle of technical, daily updates of areas captured by NATO-backed “rebel forces”, then lost back to Gaddafi’s military, and again recaptured by the rebels in their creeping territorial advances towards Tripoli…

How is it that the media’s concern for human rights did not extend to the victims of NATO bombing campaigns in the Libyan cities of Tripoli and Sirte?

How come the international community’s drive to protect the lives of Libyan civilians in Benghazi lost steam the minute NATO stepped in and actually increased the number of casualties ten-fold?

Here in Surt, the state of decomposition of the 42 bodies first found at the site indicated that the men had been killed before anti-Kadafi forces moved in, said Dr. Abdul Rauf bin Yousef,
a doctor who examined the corpses.

Some of the bodies were removed before journalists arrived.

  9. Doctors who arrived on the scene two days before, as Libyan fighters first took control of the farmland, counted 42 dead.

“These men were killed five days ago,” said Dr Abdul Rauf Bin Yousef, before interim government forces were in control.

Some had been removed, doctors said, but yesterday 17 still remained. What exactly happened to these men in their last hours is not proven, but accounts from other prisoners paint a grim picture.

  10. 'You want to kill the story'

Abdul Rauf, a doctor who sides with the revolutionary forces, said he examined some of the dead and thinks they were probably killed by Gadhafi loyalists last weekend, as NTC troops launched their all-out assault to finally capture Sirte.

"I think that they were people which they held, and when our fighters reached there, like it's the last chance: Just kill them and run away. Just don't leave them to tell the story," Rauf said. "It's like that. You want to kill the story with them."

Anis Farej, who was detained for nearly a month in the Sirte jail, said he believes the bodies are his fellow prisoners, though he could only recognize and name a few of them. One was Abdullah Ferjani, Farel said, a sheik from Sirte who was arrested because of his anti-Gadhafi stance.

Rauf said the bodies are hard to identify because they're now swollen. The ongoing hostilities have made it difficult for coroners or pathologists to attend to them.

    1. "The doctors now are with the people who are injured. They can't come and just run around with dead bodies and try to figure out what really happened with them and all that," he said.

Nearly 1,100 NTC fighters were wounded and 120 killed in the past week alone in fighting around Sirte, according to doctors at the forces' field hospital. The Red Cross has said it expects to find more dead when it gets access to the city.

The apparent slaughter in Sirte comes after the discovery in August of up to 153 charred bodies in a small warehouse next to one of Gadhafi's military complexes in Tripoli, the capital. The building was said to be a makeshift jail for people who helped the opposition during the uprising against the deposed Libyan leader.

The helicopter airlift service, established at the Western front field hospital, has heavily reduced the transport time for the critically injured.
Two helicopters of the former Libyan regime are now averaging around five medical air evacuations per day.
The Russian made Mi-8 can carry up to eight seriously injured patients with standing room for minor cases. The smaller Mi-17 has five beds. Each has a flight team of two with a minimum of two medical staff.
