Dr. Moaz Zeiton

December 14, 2011
(incomplete, rough draft/outline)

The following is a series of comments, edited slightly, submitted by contributor Felix on this rebel doctor of peripheral significance. At the moment, I'm not still up to absorbing and editing this, but wanted the post up in case there's more info waiting to be added. It's good practice to have a best place to submit that information.

---
It's worth examining the BBC report Libya: Fighting in Tripoli amid reports of atrocities by Rupert Wingfield-Hayes at the Mitiga Hospital (August 25)
The Manchester doctor, Moaz Zeiton adds that the disfiguring injuries "couldn't quite be explained"
A patient in bed, charmingly draped with the new flag of Libya, Mansour Al-Hadi is interviewed as the only survivor of the school executions. He says "They were tortured for days, urine was poured over them, finally two nights ago they were ordered outside, the men were made to kneel against a wall, and then sprayed with machine gun fire (allegedly)
it is not clear how Al-Hadi survived.

Peter Graff of Reuters - also reported Thirty Gaddafi fighters found dead at Tripoli camp on the hospital at Mitiga the same day.
Five of the dead were at a field hospital nearby, with one in an ambulance strapped to a gurney with an intravenous drip in his arm.

The encampment was strewn with Gaddafi paraphernalia - caps and pictures of the Libyan leader - and Gaddafi green flags flew nearby.

Some of the dead wore military uniforms while others wore civilian clothes. Some were African men. Gaddafi is known to have recruited soldiers from neighbouring countries.
Two of the bodies were charred beyond recognition. The incident took place at a traffic circle in an area of Tripoli that had been held by forces loyal to Gaddafi.

"Yesterday a truck arrived at the hospital with 17 dead bodies," Kirsty Campbell of the International Medical Corps told Reuters at Mitiga hospital.
"These guys were rounded up 10 days ago. They were found in Bab al-Aziziya when the guys (rebel fighters) went in. These guys were shot in an execution there," she said. The wounds were not battlefield injuries, she said. Rebel fighters overran the fortified Bab al-Aziziya complex, the centre of Gaddafi's power, on Tuesday. She said there had been reports of more bodies, but added: "I myself counted 17 last night." Campbell said family members had identified the victims.
Dr Zeiton is described as an activist who has filed stories for the Guardian newspaper since April. In fact he writes the very next day, 26 August:I witnessed Tripoli's liberation, but the Libyan revolution is not over yet
Later, I was working in the Mitiga air base, where there is a hospital. Around dusk, a large truck turned up unexpectedly with bodies piled in the back, all riddled with bullets. To cut a long story short, an injured person was later brought to the hospital who told us what happened. They were all held or captured over the past week or two in different areas of Tripoli and they all ended up in a school that was being used as a prison by Gaddafi brigades/loyalists. When their guards retreated, they executed all the prisoners – except this injured guy who got shot in the leg and hand then pretended to be dead.

He was able to identify most of the 17 bodies as he had spent some time with them and got to know them all. I took pictures one by one of them and documented all the injuries to their bodies (many of them shot in the head). It was a pretty traumatic experience for me – I spent three hours doing that in a gown and gloves, sweating buckets. With the stench from them all, I gagged a lot – almost vomited quite a few times. These are the kinds of crimes that need to be documented in case Gaddafi is captured
More from him on 21 October

Dr Moaz Zeiton also popped up on Sky TV as Dr Moes(sic) for an interview, شاهد على مذبحة قاعده معيتيقه - Witness to the massacre,Mitiga base, captured here (25 August 11.52) He talks first about working in a large hospital,(Abu Salim?) then he talks about August 24..... "on Wednesday,I worked in a different hospital in the eastern part of the city in the Mitiga Air Base wth is aa hospital which used to be used as a military hospital. Probably around dusk time a truck, quite a large truck with an open back turned up quite unexpectedly and even before got the truck I could hear people crying and wailing so I went out to have a look at what was in this truck ,and even before I got to the truck ..the stench from truck was quite overwhelming .and as I looked inside the truck there was poss 16 or 17 ...I think it was 17 altogether, that we counnted, bodies that were just riddled with bullets from head to toe, I mean a lot of them were in the head actually but they also had bullets in different parts of their bodies. Later we found out what had happened that these were all people that were basically held by Gadaffi loyalists over the past few days and they were possibly captured over the past week or two - kidnapped if you like - they were held in a school quite close to the city centre in the Abu Slim district and what had happened was that as the loyalists retreated they went into Abu Slim and executed all these people before they retreated and one of the civilians that was injured he was actually one of the victims because he was shot in the leg,and they failed to execute him, so he actually told us everything that happened and he was able to identify most of the bodies that were there so that we notified the families as well. But they had been there for about a day and the stench from them was overwhelming, and spent about 3 hours, possibly, documenting and photographing all of the injuries, the entrance and exit wounds from the bullets because it became apparent that, I think, that these are the kind of things that are going to be required to prosecute Gaddafi in the International Criminal Court. These are the war crimes that we are talking about, this is exactly what we are talking about, and I'm sure this has been replicated in many parts of the city and even in the country as well"

The ubiquitous Doctor Moaz was also reported in the Daily Mail, 23 August 2011 Moaz, a Tripoli-born doctor with UK links, was prevented from reaching the centre of the city by clashes and pockets of resistance. Someone was shot in front of him by a sniper from a roof...

Dr Moaz (qualified University of Leeds, 2009) also gave an interview for CBC on on 29 August 2011. He is described as travelling to Libya where "he has been collecting firsthand medical evidence of abuses by Gadhafi forces". (but obviously not of abuses by rebel forces). This is what he says, for the record... Anchor:You are collecting evidence in Tripoli for future war crimes prosecutions... "When the bodies that we received at Matiga Hospital, the 17 bodies that we received a few days ago, there was no human rights organisation at the hospital at the time, no Human Rights Watch no ICRC, the Red Cross, they were't there, so the families of those people with accordance to Islamic tradition they would want to bury their loved ones as soon as possible so myself and some colleagues actually took it upon ourselves to document some of this evidence before the evidence was buried essentially because there would be no way of getting evidence so we undertook the demoralising and depressing task, I must say, of photographing each individual body, photographing the gunshot wounds that they had and the type of injures they had, and a lot of them were quite hard to explain some of them had disfiguring injuries to the limbs and also there were quite a few bodies that had gunshot wounds to the back of the head so hopefully this will stand in good evidence for future war crimes at the International Criminal Ccourt Anchor:"So evidence consistent with torture and exectuion?" (by whom?) Absolutely, ,yes, that also goes in hand with evidence that the survivor gave us. There was a patient that actually arrived at the same time who witnessed exactly what had happened. He was actually amongst these people when they were klled and they had failed to kill him. So he was in a detention cetre that the regime forces had set up in a school and when they retreated from the area when the area was falling they took them out into the yard and executed them all. And himself he was shot three times but they failed to execute him so was able to name 15 of the 17 bodes by name and also by area where they lived because he had spent a week with them in the detention centre.... I am a junior doctor,.. my work has just been general sort of medical and surgical work in a large hospital in the UK.. so I have been totally unprepared... continutes... doctors are afraid to go work ... talks generally.. Anchor:Are you seeing cases of retribution? I wouldn't say I have seen any cases of reribution myself.."retribution is not allowed......I have only been here for one week"
another doctor?
http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/08/24/live-blog-gadhafi-releases-taped-message/
24 August 2011] [Updated 11:02 p.m. ET, 5:02 a.m. Thursday in Libya] The bodies of 17 rebels killed Tuesday by Gadhafi forces near the longtime leader's compound were taken Wednesday to a hospital in eastern Tripoli, a doctor there told CNN. Dr. Mohammed Rashed said the victims had been executed. Rashed, a Libyan who has worked as a consultant in Britain for 25 years, said he was volunteering with a medical group at a Tripoli hospital when a patient showed up Wednesday seeking treatment for a leg wound. The patient told Rashed that he was one of 25 people who had been abducted from their homes by Gadhafi forces, taken to a military barracks near Gadhafi's compound and accused of complicity with the rebels. As the Gadhafi forces began to execute them, rebel forces began storming Bab al-Azizia, he said. The resulting confusion gave some of the captives the chance to escape, he said.

  1. The Doctor's English language was clearly good spinning the story to the western media.
His father,Asaid Ali Zeiton is a Dermatologist or Breast Surgeon who qualified at Al Fateh University in Tripoli in 1981. See e.g. here or here

Did you notice that the new NTC Health Minister is an Irish Citizen , an Opthalmologist from Drogheda?

this recent debate in the Irish Parliament,7 December sees the Irish Government salivating at new business opportunities in Libya in the medical and pharma fields....
Is this the same "Libyan writer" Dr Fathi Al-Akkari who writes here in English about the Gaddafi regime?

The massacre victims dumped at Mitiga (why?) are interesting, because there seems to be no photographic or video evidence. It is only oral. Dr Zeiton says he took photos.
I am also amazed at the speed at which victims are matched with families here, all courtesy of the single survivor, Mr Al-Hadi who knew all the names and addresses of his fellow captives...

Where was the school? Al-Intisar district? (it is quoted as Abu Salim district - and the Oil Clinic in Al Intisar distict is near to Abu Salim. But nowhere near Mitiga. Mitiga includes the Okba Ben Nafi air base, which was operated by the Americans and known as Wheelus before independence (Guardian 25 Feb 2011)

Peter Graff also dropped by on 25 August for Reuters.(quoted Campbell) What he also writes...
One man at the Mitiga hospital had both arms and one leg bandaged. Doctors said he was one of the survivors.

Usama Al-Hadi Mansur, 36, a clerk, said he had been arrested some days before and was in a cell with 23 other men at the Gharour prison, on the edge of the Bab Al-Aziziya compound.

He said that on Tuesday, as the rebels entered the capital, the prison guards ordered all the inmates to lie on the ground and opened fire on them. He said he was hit. “Allah gave me a chance to survive.”

He said that he lay on the ground for several minutes and heard the sound of breathing coming from the one other man in the cell who had survived. He said he and the other survivor then waited several hours before the rebels arrived and released them.

Doctors showed Reuters 15 dead bodies in the yard behind the Mitiga hospital. They were riddled with bullets, and were bloated, indicated they had been left in the heat for some time.

One of the doctors at the hospital,Hizar Ali, said the prison guards had thrown an explosive device into the prison cell before opening fire, but the survivor who spoke to Reuters did not confirm this.

Odd that Anas Guma El Gamaty doesn't mention Loughborough University - he quotes studying Chemistry at Garyounis University on his facebook page. Pehaps related but not the same person. Images also differ.
There is a fabulous YouTube clip from The World This Week when El Gamaty senior storms off the programme, ranting, because Sukant Chandan politely refuses to accept that 10,000 civilians have been killed.(uploaded 1 May...) Certainly not fit to represent the new Libya in the UK!

Person of interest at the Sadeq Institute: Canadian Osama Bouri from Saskatewan. "He has worked in Canada and Libya in senior-level capacities in the Investment Department at the Libyan Investment Authority and in Financial Control at BASF Wintershall in Libya." Wintershall was the remote oil field outpost in the Libyan desert which seemed to require the special NATO permitted flights in and out during the no-fly zone period, as noted in the comments here

GMC reference no 7039578 Moez Asaid Zeiton Registered with a licence to practise 2009
"Rashid" is in fact Dr Mohamed Daw Rashed, qualified 1981, who is a general surgeon at Kettering General Hospital in the English Midlands.
3524415 Mohamed Daw Rashed Registered with a licence to practise 1981
He was in touch with the rebel-supporting Guardian newspaper here , 24 August 2011.
11.34pm: We've been forwarded an email about an apparent civilian massacre in Tripoli in which around 200 people may have been killed.

The email from Mohammed Rashed, who we're told is a surgeon from Kettering hospital, Northamptonshire, who is currently in the Libyan capital, says almost 20 bodies of executed civilians have been brought into Matiga Hospital in Tripoli in the past hour. He says it appears that at least one of those killed was an anti-Gaddafi activist.

    His email states:

Apparently, 17 bodies were brought to the hospital. They all appear to have been executed by being shot at point blank range. The bodies are all clothed in civilian clothing and are all male between 15/16 and late middle age.

Apparently one of the relatives of the executed bodies identified the body and said he was arrested about 10 days ago for being a political activist in Tripoli. The bodies were found in Bab Al Azaziya (I am not sure if that is in the compound or in the general area).

I've so far been unable to reach Rashed on his Tripoli phone. But I'll try to bring you more on this as soon as possible.

I see no other reference to 200 people being killed as quoted in the "email" from Rashed. notice may have. With no evidence, just to plant the idea of a Gaddafi massacre (one of his dead is allegedly anti-Gaddafi) in Tripoli.

RIVERS (voice-over): I meet Uday Dominir (ph), a 27-year-old fighter shot twice by a sniper yesterday. This is near to where he was shot. Hardly a surface that's not punctuated by the ferocious firefight.

And at the end of this smoke-filled street, an intersection littered with bodies. I count a dozen, a grisly tableau of urban warfare, the victims' hands bound behind them. The rebels say they were execute by Gadhafi's men, but these bodies appear to be black Africans. Black Africans make up a large portion of Gadhafi's army, raising questions about whether the men were executed by the rebels.

    2. @Hurriya,no, the nurse at the Oil Clinic was called Karen Graham, as seen and heard here in this Scottish STV audio clip from 28 Jan 2012,Award for Libyan conflict nurse

She now lives in Libya and is nursing services manager at the Oil Clinic. "After studying at the Glasgow South College of Nursing she spent four years as an army nurse, serving in both the Falklands and Germany. She headed to Libya in November 2010 and immediately started at the Oil Clinic, a district hospital looking after the workers of oil companies in the area. In August 2011, the hospital became the centre for trauma medicine during the Libyan conflict. While many people left the city, Karen and two other British nurses remained at the hospital, gaining the respect of both colleagues and patients."

Questions - who was paying the salaries at the oil clinic - oil companies? - and who were the othern two?

(it wasn't years at the Oil Clinic, rather months...)
The BBC quickly found her for an interview on 27 August

Just a few minutes ago I spoke with Dr Ahmed Bethaher, a general surgeon at the Jala Hospital in Benghazi.

He told us a division of the local military has joined the protesters and had helped in the liberation of a large military compound where political prisoners had been held.

Some of the prisoners had been killed.

Dr Bethaher also told us African militias were still present and could fight again for the Gaddafi Government in Benghazi.

AHMED BETHAHER, GENERAL SUGREON, JALA HOSPITAL: Right now, I'm in the military compound which belongs to private militias, belong to Colonel Gaddafi.

contradictory...some pictures show quiet calm streets in Benghazi..." wonder why? Because it was all a lie. Those hundred
quote on ABC from London demonstration 20 Feb 2011.
"My country is swimming in a pool of blood. People have been massacred openly in the street. It's a bloodbath," said Abdelwahb Naas, 56, a doctor.
      Rubbish. More rubbish ..
"Libyan-Australian Mohammed told ABC Radio he spoke to his cousin, a doctor in one of Benghazi's main hospitals, last night.

"He told me last night it's more than 280 people killed and more than 500 people injured and there is a shortage of the blood and all medical supplies in the hospital," he said."

And the Australian PM joins in the fakery..
Foreign Affairs Minister Kevin Rudd says reports of the number of deaths in Libya appear to be credible.

"They range from 173 to over 200 and are primarily concentrated in Benghazi, which you've just indicated in your report," he told Radio National.

By 23 Feb, the Daily Mail (UK) is reporting..At least 450 people are thought to have died in the capital and there are unconfirmed reports of 2,000 bodies in Benghazi, Libya’s second city. Fantasy.

more than 2,000 people had been killed in that city alone in the past days of fighting.

The 60-year-old anesthetist said that on the first day of fighting in Benghazi our ambulances counted 75 bodies.

He said there were 200 on the second, then more than 500. On the third day I ran out of morphine and medications.

Also remarkable reading about Mitiga Hospital:

One of the doctors at the hospital,HISAR ALI, said the prison guards had thrown an explosive device into the prison cell before opening fire, but the survivor who spoke to Reuters did not confirm this.

Osama Hadi Mansur Al-Swayi was one of the survivors of the massacre at the Internal Security building. He was one of approximately 25 people who were held there. He told Human Rights Watch ....

A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL who inspected the 17 bodies that were transferred from the Internal Security building to Matiga Hospital said that about half of the entrance wounds were to the back of the head, and the rest were to the chest and face. He also noted recent abrasions and lacerations on the ankles and wrists suggesting that they had been cuffed.

THE HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR introduced Al-Swayi to Human Rights Watch as a survivor from the same massacre from which they received the 17 corpses.

By Thursday, Mitiga Hospital was running low on tetanus shots and immunoglobin syrums, doctors said. Representatives from the International Medical Corps had arrived to assess the situation. They photographed the bodies of the dead prisoners as well.

Re the Nafusa Mountains , quite a few UK docs went there via Tunisia. Here's one the BBC caught up with in July 2011, Bill Law reporting: I'm travelling with Saleyha Ahsan, a British doctor I first met in 1998, when she was a captain in the British Army and the first Muslim woman to graduate from Sandhurst.

When she left the army she went into medicine. Now in Libya she is volunteering with other doctors, most of them Libyans, helping refugees and the wounded from both sides of the conflict.
"I found on organisation online called Global Relief Libya - doctors organising themselves and getting involved," she says.

"I want to be part of this Arab Spring, even though I was born in Britain and my roots are in Pakistan and Afghanistan."

She (Saleyha Ahsan) is the Polymath now studing law at Essex relating to detention without trial, control orders (LIFG/Al Q stuff) . V spooky pedigree.

The decision to hand over the base occurred just 24 hours after a national conference in Misrata ordered brigades across the country to hand over everything under their control — ports, airports, border posts, camps, buildings and other assets — to the relevant NTC devolved authorities...Part of the airport is still under the control of forces belonging to Tripoli Military Council, lead by Abdul Hakim Belhaj. It has not yet been established if they have handed over the area of the airbase that they to the airforce, as required under this week’s Misrata agreement to which all the brigades signed up.

Witnesses say that while at work in May this year, Mr. Darrat and five co-workers were arrested by government officers and shoved into the back of a van. On Aug. 25, his body was discovered in a warehouse among over 150 other bodies. Oh really...
      From Huffington Post 25 Aug...
A friend says Nader Benrewin was shot by a sniper as he stormed Gadhafi's compound on Tuesday. He was 24.

Haitham Alabadleh says Benrewin was born in Edmonton but had family living in Tripoli, the Libyan capital.

He says Benrewin had lived and worked in Ottawa for three years before deciding to return to Libya to offer support to rebel forces.

Alabadleh remembers his friend as a peace activist who loved to attend seminars and enjoyed meals and riverside strolls with his friends.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of reports that a Canadian was killed in Libya but declined to offer any confirmation.

      Oh really.

Mass graves of recent vintage have indeed been found — 13 of them confirmed by the Red Cross, or “about 20” found by the government, according to the Transitional National Council’s humanitarian coordinator, Muattez Aneizi. More are being found “nearly every day,” Mr. Aneizi said.

The Red Cross counted only 125 dead from the 13 sites it confirmed, with 53 of those found in a hangar near Tripoli’s airport.

While the rebels may not have died in the numbers their side has claimed, there is no doubt that many were killed, often horribly, after having been taken prisoner.

As the Qaddafi government collapsed and its die-hards fled from Tripoli and other strongholds, such war crimes happened in many well-documented cases. They just did not happen in many thousands of cases, judging from the available evidence.

There has been no explanation of the basis for either the council’s tally of 30,000 to 50,000 dead, or the number preferred by
the new government’s minister of health, Naji Barakat, a more modest 25,000 to 30,000.

Because there is a video showing bodies allegedly from 22 August, but uploaded 30 August..مستشفى شارع الزاوية 22 اغسطس from LibyaChannelTV
It seemed to have been ransacked in this video

This video makes it clear that the Zawiyah street hospital is the Tripoli Central Hospital at 0.20.

As Andrew Carr of the Lowy Institute warned, quoting an earlier piece from Philip Eliason It's a one-way street from here. But it will be an increasingly bad alley as the rebels get close to Tripoli....We know from Iraq, various African states, Bosnia and Afghanistan that turfing out a dictatorial regime which has made lifetime enemies leads to some frightening retribution....This is what we face in Libya. Can the leadership of the Libyan Transitional National Council (TNC) hold back decades of aggrievement when its militias reach the capital?

He said the men had been executed in an underground prison. "They had gunshot injuries all over their bodies," he said.
The stench of the bodies suggested the incident had occurred a few days ago, he said.

Two of those shot at had escaped the execution by hiding under blankets, he said. It was quieter today, he said.

  41. Newser) – As fighting continues in Tripoli for the future of Libya, bodies are piling up in the streets—from combat, reprisals, and innocents just caught in the crossfire.

And as the corpses decompose in the summer heat, they are becoming such a health risk that removing the bodies has become the interim government's top priority, writes the Independent.
"We have started immediate action on moving these dead people," says a member of the Tripoli council. "There are other shortages and we do not want illnesses to start."

  44. Dr. Imad al-Hitushi prepared his clinic in the Dahara section of Tripoli.

As rebel forces closed in on Tripoli in early August, Dr. Imad al-Hitushi prepared his clinic to service their wounded.

He relayed word to their leaders in Zawiyah that his medical facility was ready to treat their injured.
"We heard so many stories about rebels dying in the battlefield," says the OPHTHALMOLOGIST in his small five-bed clinic in the Dahara section of Tripoli.

"I called other doctors — surgeons and [gastro-intestinal] specialists and told them to be ready." When the fight arrived in Tripoli on Aug. 20, they were ready. Al-Hitushi and his fellow doctors treated dozens of rebels wounded by gunfire and others who were roughed up by Gaddafi forces.

One senior OPHTHALMOLOGIST at Misrata’s Central Hospital reported that Qaddafi forces began
    attacking the city’s 150-bed hospital on 23 March 2011.190

  48. Dr. Houssein Fergani,
an assistant clinical professor of gastroenterology at McMaster University’s department of medicine, said he has lost family in the fighting and fears for the rest of his family’s safety.

Fergani said fighting in Benghazi, his hometown and Libya’s second-largest city, lasted for five days with scores of people killed.
He said the violence in Benghazi peaked on Feb. 17, but that the situation in the city has quieted down over the past two days.
    .
Fergani, who estimates about 400 families of Libyan descent call Hamilton home, said his community is working hard to try to help.
The country has a desperate need for trauma physicians, he said, and several local doctors and anesthesiologists are preparing to head home to treat the many wounded. Others have been raising donations for medical supplies, he said.
“We are trying to help our people achieve what they want, which is democracy and freedom.”

Same old lies and bullshit, The people shooting are the African militia who Gadhafi hired and supported for many years,” .....“People were opening homes for the demonstrators to provide some safety, but the some of the militia invaded those homes and killed those kids....scores of people killed......For the last two nights, my family has been afraid of bombing” by Gadhafi loyalists,

Libya: August 25 as it happened

18.07 The BBC is reporting from Mitiga Hospital where doctors are handling the bodies of rebel fighters allegedly executed by Gaddafi loyalists.
Among the dead is a 15-year-old boy. A doctor from Manchester is examining the bodies and says he is collecting evidence for a possible war crimes tribunal.
11.30 A Northern Irish teenager is fighting with a sniper-hunting team in Zawiyah.

Tareg Gazel, whose mother is from Belfast and whose father is Libyan, told AFP he is part of an eight-man rebel unit clearing the town of mercenaries hired by Col Gaddafi. His uncle was killed by a sniper while leaving a mosque.

We killed four last night, two the night before.
We hear from informants that there’s a sniper somewhere, so we go to see what’s happening, we stay several hours just to observe and then we do our tricks. At night the job is easier. We attach a light to a dog, and when it crosses the street, we see where the sniper’s laser sight is coming from. That’s how we got the last one.

CIGA Healthcare, the Ballymena-based specialist in self-diagnostic tests, has won a second contract in Libya which strengthens its position in this developing market in North Africa.

The company, which has taken part in a series of Invest Northern Ireland missions to markets in Africa and the Gulf states particularly Saudi Arabia, gained its first contract in Libya in 2011 for its SureSign range of diagnostic kits, now on sale in over 40 countries worldwide.

The kits are used for home tests for conditions such as high cholesterol, diabetes and blood pressure and are now being sold in pharmacies throughout Libya.

The contract positions CIGA for significant potential growth following political developments in the marketplace last year.

The restoration of business with Libya was announced by Christian Berglund, CIGA’s International Sales Manager, and welcomed by Dr Vicky Kell, Invest NI Trade Director.

"There were a lot of snipers in our neighbourhood," she said. "I would come to hospital in the car, and then run out fast, with my head down, because we were afraid from the sniper ...

"Our hospital had to be secret because if they knew, they would kill us. It happened in other secret hospitals," she said, showing me the emergency first aid pack she carries everywhere in a plain black backpack.

During the afternoon, rebels pulled back from an area near Green Square, in what they claim was a plan to launch a coordinated offensive elsewhere. Rebel forces in Tajoura said they were negotiating with loyalist forces, holed up in the local hospital, to surrender.[73]

We have managed to raise nearly 400,000 pounds, but the aid we have delivered to Libya has been worth nearer five million pounds since we have received many gifts in kind.

    1. Thanks H. - Facebook page; see also this earlier story , May 5 2012 at Al Arabiya: Libyan interim leader in hospital but stable: medics (AFP):The hospital’s director told AFP that Abdel Jalil’s doctors had ruled out the possibility of a heart attack and recommended two to three days of rest under medical supervision.

“Abdel Jalil is fit and is only suffering from a drop in blood pressure and fatigue in general,” Fathi Jehani said.

Official May 17 story at Libya Herald: Head of Benghazi Medical Centre wounded after refusing to resign on instructions of Benghazi Local Council : The director of the Benghazi Medical Centre, Fathi Jehani, has been shot by a four-man armed gang. He was wounded in the arm and has been transferred to the local Ibn Sina hospital. His condition is said to be stable. The incident took place yesterday. his assailants are now reported to have been arrested.

Initially it was reported that a member of the Abu Salim Martyrs Brigade had shot him. However, this as since been denied.

It is understood that the Benghazi Local Council was unhappy with his performance and that the council leader, Jamal Ben Noor, had issued a letter dismissing him. A security team was dispatched to instruct him to stand down from his position.

The Libya Herald understands that an argument occurred at the door of the hospital and Jehani allegedly pulled out a gun, which led to his being shot.

Jehani has not confirmed or denied that he brandished a weapon, but maintains that the brigade broke into his office and shot him. He has said that he plans on suing Ben Noor.
