Updates Sept.18
The average reader should need no links to know of this story by now, and I have nothing great to offer other than this post to collect commentary. Maybe I'll put something more here, depending. I'm curious if this gets blamed on remnants of Gaddafi loyalists, or on the Salafists it would seem like.
Sept.18: On blaming loyalists: Indian Express:
A senior Libyan official accused supporters of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi of carrying out an attack that killed the US ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi.Fox News/Infowars:
Deputy Interior Minister Wanis al-Sharif told a news conference in Benghazi that the attackers had used rocket-propelled grenades.
There were RPGs...which shows there were forces exploiting this. They are remnants of the (former) regime, he said. The news conference was broadcast on Al Jazeera television.
While the establishment media has engaged in a concerted effort to bury the fact that today’s attack on a U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was carried out by the same extremists the U.S. armed during the overthrow of Colonel Gaddafi, Libya’s Ambassador to Washington Ali Aujali launched his own lame attempt to shift the blame, ludicrously pointing the finger at Gaddafi loyalists. Also, Petri has somehow assembled a playlist of 83 videos of the Benghazi consulate attack. One in particular sounds interesting, and was picked up by Dputamadre: Chris Stevens: Hunting or Saving?
“We know that Qaddafi’s associates are in Libya. Of course, they took this chance to infiltrate among the people,” Aujali said in today in an interview.

A cause for concern is that the SSC has incorporated brigades such as the Salafi-linked Abu Salim Martyrs' Brigade which is enforcing security in Derna.
The latter is perceived as being a 'thuggish' group well known for carrying out vendetta attacks against security officials linked to the former regime .
A state of high alert was declared by rats in the city by the deputy rat interior minister responsible for eastern Libya, Rat Wanis Al-Sharif.

ReplyDeleteWhen I heard from Mr. Stevens death today, I remembered that it was him who wrote one of the cables from Tripolis published by Wikileaks. When he was working for the U.S. embassay in Tripoli in 2008, he was deeply concerned about the islamic Extremism in Eastern Libya. I think this document is still one of the best about the real situation in Eastern Libya at the eve of the war.
But not much later, he and others obviously decided to use these guys for their aims.
His fate maybe tragic, but there where definitly many more innocent victims in this war. He knew well what he was doing.

Despite the 230 security situations in Libya, international oil companies were back in business so that by the end of September 2012, Libya was producing 90 per cent of its pre-NATO intervention output. In fact more oil was now being pumped out than in the month immediately prior to the start of the NATO war. Foreign companies had been trooping back into Libya with BP being the last to arrive in May. Even without the hundreds of thousands of foreign workers, the stability of the exportation of oil had driven foreign companies to focus on who would be in control of Benghazi, especially after the noisy declaration of autonomy by the militia/political leaders in February.
DeleteUS oil companies did not want to be left behind in this new insensate struggle, hence US diplomatic efforts were now directed at Benghazi.
Christopher Stevens had been appointed ambassador of the United States to Libya in January 2012 and arrived in Tripoli in May.
When the uprisings had started in February 2011 and the French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy was going into Benghazi to mobilize support for French interests, Chris Stevens was one of the first US diplomatic personnel to be on the ground in Benghazi.
He had served as a 'Special Representative' to the Libyan Transitional National Council from March 2011 to November 2011 during the NATO intervention.
Prior to this period he had served as the Deputy Chief of Mission in Libya from 2007 to 2009. At that time, Stevens described Gaddafi as an 'engaging and charming interlocutor' as well as a 'strong partner in the war against terrorism.'
http://allafrica.com/stories/201210121033.html
Chris Stevens belonged to that section of the US Department of State that was very knowledgeable about the movements of militia members between Benghazi, Libya, and the current war against the Assad regime in Syria. Libyan Islamists from the Eastern region comprise the largest single component of the 'foreign fighters' who are playing an ever more dominant role in the war being waged in Syria with the aim of toppling the government of President Assad.

Consulate Attack: NATO Stooge Ludicrously Points Finger at Gaddafi Loyalists
ReplyDeleteWhile the establishment media has engaged in a concerted effort to bury the fact that today’s attack on a U.S.
“We know that Qaddafi’s associates are in Libya. Of course, they took this chance to infiltrate among the people,” Aujali said in today in an interview.
For Aujiali to claim that the attack, which took place in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, was the work of Gaddafi loyalists, is a plainly absurd trick to manipulate the narrative behind the incident in a desperate bid to save face.

Libya was well divided before Ambassador Stevens set foot there.
It was divided as a result of the NATO intervention.
You have warlords and militias, raided weapon stocks that were formerly held by the Gaddafi government. So it’s absolute chaos.
Meanwhile, amongst this chaos on the surface, the oil assets, the state utilities, the water assets, some of the agricultural assets, and some of the economic pockets have already been divided up by British, American, and French companies.
They’ve divided the country and are selling off its assets for pennies on the dollar in order to pay off the IMF’s money injection they’ve put into Libya.
The corporations will still profit from this chaos, which they’ve done very efficiently. And that’s not being talked about in the mainstream media.
Wow, that's a lot of comments while I slept. H, all others, thanks. Interesting to se Gaddafi loyalists blamed after all. Peet, very good to hear from you again, and great point.

Slain Ambassador Chris Stevens Slipped Into Libya on a Cargo Ship During Revolution," by Amy Bingham for ABC OTUS News, September 12:
ReplyDeleteDuring the early days of the Libyans' fight to overthrow Moammar Gadhafi, Christopher Stevens wrangled a ride on a Greek cargo ship and sailed into the rebels' stronghold city of Benghazi. He arrived at a time when the crackle of gunfire could be heard each night.
Stevens and his team didn't even have a place to stay, but found space in a hotel briefly, moving out after a car bomb went off in the parking lot, according to his own account in State Magazine last year.
Stevens, whose diplomatic foothold were a couple of battered tables, was on literally on the rebels' side while the revolution was at its most vulnerable and in danger of being crushed by Gadhafi's troops who were moving on the city.
The threat was pushed back at the last minute by the intervention of NATO planes which began bombing Gadhafi's tanks and troops.

United States President Barack Obama has sent two warships to the Libyan coast, after condemning as “outrageous and shocking” the murder of US Ambassador Chris Stevens and three of his staff on Tuesday.
The two Aegis-class destroyers, both equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles, have reportedly been deployed to give the US administration greater flexibility as it considers its response to the attacks. USS Laboon is already positioned in the Mediterranean near to Libya, and USS McFaul is said to be heading from Gibraltar to the same destination.
Obama is also sending a 50-strong counter-terrorist team to Benghazi, the site of the murders, which coincided with the 11th anniversary of the 11 September terrorist attacks on the United States.

One of the four Americans killed in Libya earlier this week when an American diplomatic mission was stormed on September 11 had been deployed by the US State Department on an intelligence gathering operation to find and destroy dangerous weapons.
Glen Doherty, a 42-year-old former Navy SEAL, told ABC News only one month before his death that he had been contracted by the State Department to travel overseas in an effort to locate and eliminate MANPADS shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles. The US government had feared that as many as thousands of the high-powered warheads had fallen into the hands of both rebels and regime fighters after former leader Muammar Gaddafi was executed earlier this year amid months of chaos in region.

The future remains uncertain and the new Libya appears to be worse than what the old Libya was only accused of being by its foes.
After betrayal, regime change and assassination, what’s left is confusion, chaos, mayhem, and unfettered access to the natural wealth.
“Now the top leadership represents those that were exiled in America,” observed A. Akbar Muhammad, the International Representative of the Nation of Islam.
Many of the transitional actors have similar ties to America and Europe which raises credibility questions.
If they were exiled in Algeria, Morocco or Egypt then it “would not raise the specter of suspicion about their overall objective,” he added.

American officials believe the attack was planned, but Chris Stevens had been back in the country only a short while and the details of his visit to Benghazi, where he and his staff died, were meant to be confidential.

Mr Stevens had been on a visit to Germany, Austria and Sweden and had just returned to Libya when the Benghazi trip took place with the US embassy's security staff deciding that the trip could be undertaken safely.

The bizarre circumstances behind The Innocence of Muslims, its shadowy creators and the deliberate attempt to manipulate the film to offend Muslims clearly suggests that the whole farce was a contrived set-up to inflame tensions in order to justify an acceleration of U.S., Israeli and NATO aggression across the Middle East and North Africa.

Unmanned aerial drones are also said to have been deployed over Libya to help seek out the perpetrators and monitor any suspicious activity.

One step of the Islamization plan for #Libya: by BY SHARRON WARD | SEPTEMBER 12, 2012
http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2012/09/12/the_battle_of_the_shrines
Saadi Qaddafi, one of the deposed leader's sons now living in exile in Niger, has publicly allied himself (in Arabic) with the Salafis and pledged repeatedly to return to Libya to lead a counter-revolution.
Concern about Saadi doings has much to do with the fear of rising Saudi involvement in Libyan politics. Saadi also has well-documented links with the ultraconservative Wahhabi sect of Saudi Arabia, which has been promoting the Libyan Salafi movement.
The Libyan Salafis desecrating the shrines base their actions on fatwas, Islamic legal pronouncements, from Saudi clerics. Libyan Islamic scholars have issued a statement blaming Saudi Arabia for the attacks on Sufi shrines, noting that the Saudi scholar who issued one of the anti-Sufi fatwas receives a salary from the Saudi government.
The transitional government has complained to the Saudi government, which it accuses of interfering in its internal affairs.

ReplyDeleteThe "majority" of Libyans supported the Jamahariya government under Muammar Gaddafi.
Therefore, yes, it is correct that the majority of the Libyan people do not support what the Salafis are doing in Libya and see them and the so-called government in Libya being one and the same. The majority of the Libyan people demanded that the US and NATO stop bombing Libya but the American leaders ignored it. There were many calls by Libya for a ceasefire but all of them were ignored.
Gaddafi told the West that the real criminals are those who have now killed Americans who are allied with the Americans, Europeans and Arab League. The only ones somewhat on the side of Gaddafi was the African Union, and the Europeans and Arabs claimed this was because Gaddafi had bought them.
Russia, under the weak Medvedev, had deserted Libya unlike the situation with Syria under Putin.
The American and European people were warned by myself, Gaddafi and others in March of 2011 that the protest demonstrations were cover for what terrorists were doing with backing from Western NGO's (CIA and other intelligence fronts).
The terrorists would shoot people in the crowd and then point the finger at Gaddafi, the same as they started doing in Syria. The US and its allies, including the Arab League, would then give support and comfort to these terrorists, knowing that these people were terrorists and that Gaddafi's forces were not slaughtering innocent people.
They knew that not one person was killed from laser guided bombs or missiles from the Libya airforce. But this was not the narrative of the lying mainstream media in the US, Europe or Arab countries under the influence of Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
What about black Libyans, how did NATO and these mixed breed Arabs treat them? Here is your answer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=megUguhKP6I
As you can see from the video, we documented this as it was happening. To this day, blacks and black Libyans are targeted by the Western installed government in Libya.
Why haven't any of you said anything about this?
Why has Barack Obama not said or done anything about it?
What is the value of thousands of their lives vs. the lives of four white Americans killed by savage dogs unleashed and empowered by the US, Britain, France and the Arab League - the same basic groups that collaborated in the enslavement of Africans generations earlier?

Sep 18, 2012 Senior U.S. security and intelligence officials met secretly on Monday with Libyan counterparts
Some of the U.S. officials, including from the State Department, were flown in ..
The preliminary assessment is that the assault was the result of a protest that swung out of control after
LIBIYAN GUARDS PANICKED AND STARTED FIRING AT DEMONSTRATORS
,prompting a sharp response by fighters from the Salafist militia Ansar al-Sharia, say Libyan government sources.
The meetings lasted most of the day and the Americans met also with commanders from other Benghazi militias.
“As a militia, Ansur al-Shari did not attack. Some of their fighters did,” said the sources
Both the Americans and Libyans are still trying to assess whether there was any involvement by Al Qaeda, but have discovered no evidence linking the terror group to the assault.
Yesterday, Ansur al-Shari, whose leaders have claimed they did not order their fighters to attack the consulate, warned that Libya would turn into “an inferno for U.S. troops” if the U.S. military retaliated.
Speaking to Reuters, Yousef Jehani, one of the group’s leaders, said they wanted to avoid confrontation but were ready for a showdown, if Washington acted “foolishly.”
Last night, General Yousef Mangoush, the army chief of staff, met with Ansur al-Sharia leaders to get their side of the story but assured them they were not under imminent threat of attack

A security guard employed by the British security firm Blue Mountain, who was wounded in the fighting, claims there was no demonstration and the attack came out of the blue.
Libyan guards say there were demonstrations beforehand. They say it was the Americans who started shooting.
And that’s where we’re at, with the administration spinning this as a spontaneous protest gone wrong that certainly wasn’t anyone’s fault, and that no one could have seen coming.
DeleteBut as convenient as that is to protect the myth of “victory” in Libya, it doesn’t stand up to scrutiny, as witnesses report no protest was in progress before the attack and even US officials were remarking that the attackers seemed unusually well organized

= Ansar al-Shariah: The group is among "the most powerful" of the many, heavily armed militias that the government relies on to keep security in Benghazi.
In fact, it guards one of Benghazi's main hospitals.
Ansar al-Shariah numbers about 300 active members, though other factions say they believe it actually numbers as many as 5,000.
Some of its leaders are veterans of the numerous wars in Afghanistan.
Rivalries are rife between militias, but other factions are wary of tangling with Ansar al-Shariah.

Also the videos are strange and manipulated!
On http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrSUJ3bxxvU
You hardly can see (the alleged) Stevens. Stevens has mostly being cut out!
From the same(!) camera - to my observation - we find the video: "Libyans trying to help US Ambassador Chris Stevens" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRWqwnx0xuU .
Here appears what has been cut out in the first video at 1:17: We can see something of Stevens. But as soon as light gets in his face somebody - purposely!! - blocks us from taking a better look at the lit face of "Stevens".
But also this video has cuts! WHY? If it's a historical document no one would make a cut - even if a boring minute or two where left in the video.
Also: At 1:02 "Stevens'" shirt is still down. Why was it later pulled up so brutally?! I think this is all arranged - like the guy who blocks us as soon as we want to take a closer look.
Also this: The photo "victim-pic" (http://s14.directupload.net/images/120920/eww7wm6s.jpg or http://i.huffpost.com/gen/768610/thumbs/o-CHRIS-STEVENS-570.jpg?2 ) shows "Stevens" being put into a sitting position and somebody takes his cell phone into his mouth. But this scene is obviously staged, because this scene should also appear in those videos. But it doesn't! Nowhere do we see that the upper part of Stevens' body is lifted to a sitting position!
Also this: If this was Stevens -why does he not communicate. Yes, if he had fainted (being poisoned from smoke) this would be explainable. But in my snapshots you will see that his eyes are open. And he neither speaks not makes gestures. THAT IS ABSURD! ( I would have ask for an ambulance car or I would have asked "does someone speak English" or something.
Now to my snapshots from a video of a German newspaper, as it seems a bit clearer to me: http://www.welt.de/politik/article109290441/Video-soll-US-Botschafter-noch-am-Leben-zeigen.html continued...
....
ReplyDeleteMy conclusions ahead:
1. The person we see in these snapshots doesn't really resemble Chris Stevens. Yes the person shown could be a Caucasian - but also a Libyan.
2.) The red spot over the victim-Stevens' left eye cannot be seen. Though the quality of my snapshots is not good, I think we should have been able to see it.
3.) The biggest mistake of those fakers was this. I think stay staged the victim-pic, with the sitting Stevens with some young man, then they photo shopped over and changed the face to Stevens face. But here they made the mistake to copy a face of Stevens he had 10-15 years earlier. Stevens was 52 years old. And they copied the Stevens you find on http://s14.directupload.net/images/120919/rth3cj6l.jpg second in the second row (with flag in background). But Stevens was then certainly only about 40 years old. In the year 2012 Stevens had a lot of grey(!) hair like in the picture at top-right. Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador murdered in Libya, played a central role in recruiting jihadists to fight Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, according to Egyptian security officials speaking to WND.
ReplyDeleteStevens served as a key contact with the Saudis to coordinate the recruitment by Saudi Arabia of Islamic fighters from North Africa and Libya.
The jihadists were sent to Syria via Turkey to attack Assad’s forces, said the security officials.
The officials said Stevens also worked with the Saudis to send names of potential jihadi recruits to U.S. security organizations for review.
Names found to be directly involved in previous attacks against the U.S., including in Iraq and Afghanistan, were ultimately not recruited by the Saudis to fight in Syria, said the officials.

Benghazi has since become a whirlpool of rumours and reports on the motives behind the general's assassination and on the identity of those responsible for his arrest.
Jalil said Yunis died from shots fired at the chest and head and that his body had been only partially burned enabling his positive identification.
Meanwhile diplomats said that the UN Security Council is ready to release Libyan assets frozen under UN sanctions to buy humanitarian aid for the population facing growing shortages

ReplyDelete31 Jul 2011 Another militia, the so-called Nida Libya Brigade, apparently spent months recruiting, training and fortifying an old licence-plate factory in an industrial zone as its headquarters.
When other rebels stormed the headquarters in the early hours on Sunday, they claimed to find an enclave of pro-regime sentiment: green flags, portraits of Colonel Moammar Gadhafi, target lists of rebel leaders to be killed, and large amounts of explosives.
The fight to take over the Nida headquarters killed eight and injured 20, and among those who surrendered were a handful of prisoners who had escaped during a pair of jailbreaks in Benghazi on Thursday evening.
Mustafa El-Sagezly, the rebels’ deputy minister of the interior, :
When asked why dangerous militias such as the Nida group could have been allowed to muster their forces in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, Mustafa El-Sagezly, the rebels’ deputy minister of the interior, blamed the tribal structure of Libyan society.
He said the Nida militia claimed to represent a powerful tribe, although he declined to name the specific tribe involved.
“Since the issue of the tribes is sensitive, we did not want to stop them,” he said.
Even when other rebels surrounded the Nida headquarters in the middle of the night, they hesitated before attacking. They called on elders of Werfalla, the biggest tribe in Libya, who spent three hours negotiating with their fellow tribesmen inside the building.
Only when those talks broke down, witnesses say, did the killing start.
In an effort to quell any hard feelings after the raid, a delegation of Werfalla tribal elders held a news conference wearing traditional robes.
“We know some Werfalla were involved,” said Sheikh Nasr Gemali, leader of the tribe for eastern Libya. “But we want stability. Our hands will not be stained with the blood of the martyrs.”

Obeidi tribe
While some have fingered Qaddafi forces for the killing, the Obeidi tribe blames Islamists who are part of the rebel forces, and claims complicity of members of the executive board of the NTC.
The NTC dissolved the executive council in early August in response to pressure from the tribe.
But new members were never appointed, and the NTC said this week that the old members would continue to work for two more weeks.

Clinton implicates al-Qaeda in US consulate attack
Tripoli, 27 September:
Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, has suggested the deadly attack on the US consulate in Benghazi was linked to the al-Qaeda network across the Islamic Maghreb, according to a report by the New York Times.
Speaking at a high-level United Nations meeting of the Security Council on Peace and Security in the Middle East, Clinton said: “Now with a larger safe haven and increased freedom to manoeuvre, terrorists are seeking to extend their reach and their networks in multiple directions.”
She added that terrorists “are working with other violent extremists to undermine the democratic transitions under way in North Africa, as we tragically saw in Benghazi.”

I [Mohamed Ben Ghalbon/ chairman@libyanconstitutionalunion.net /Manchester]
spent most of the month of July and the last days of June 1982 in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.
This period coincided with the holy month of Ramadan. I spent most of the fasting month and Eid El-Fitr in one of the historical city’s hotels with the exception of a few days when I made a quick visit back to Britain during which I met Mr Abdulhamid Albakoush who visited me at my home in Manchester.(1)
The star of the National Front for the Salvation of Libya (NFSL) at that time was rising very fast and Rabat was one of the main centres of this organisation’s growing activities. No other group or organisation could attain this level of activity.
It was not difficult to notice the presence of the numerous leaders and members of NFSL in the Moroccan capital.
Moreover, it was equally easy for the organisers of the NFSL to obtain personal information about Libyans in that country, be they residents or visitors.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)
On February 24th, 2011, at the very outset of the Benghazi rebellion, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb posted the following statement on the al Qaeda affiliated al Fajr website:
We declare our support for the legitimate demands of the Libyan revolution.
We assert to our people in Libya that we are with you and will not let you down, God willing. We will give everything we have to support you, with God’s grace.
A few days after this statement was issued by AQIM, al Libi resurfaced.
The same al Libi exposed by David Shayler as an al Qaeda operative working inside Libya back in the 90s.
Now a top al Qaeda commander based in Afghanistan, he urged his countrymen to overthrow Muammar Qaddafi’s regime and establish Islamic rule.
Al Libi, a pseudonym that means ‘the Libyan’ in Arabic, said in a video, produced by As-Sahab, the media wing of al Qaeda, that “it would bring shame to the Libyan people if the strongman (Qaddafi) were allowed to die a peaceful death.”

Al Qaeda and Drugs in the Maghreb
Libya’s revolutionary forces have also made continual references to the fact that there are drug problems in the region and that many of the young people are affected.
Once again, this claim was scoffed at by Western media and analysts, who are ill informed about what is actually taking place on the ground.
As recently as November 2010, Moroccan police detained 34 people with ties to al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb, attempting to move 1,300 pounds of cocaine through the country.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/03/world/africa/us-said-to-be-preparing-potential-targets-tied-to-libya-attack.html?pagewanted=all
WASHINGTON — The United States is laying the groundwork for operations to kill or capture militants implicated in the deadly attack on a diplomatic mission in Libya, senior military and counterterrorism officials said Tuesday, as the weak Libyan government appears unable to arrest or even question fighters involved in the assault.
The top-secret Joint Special Operations Command is compiling so-called target packages of detailed information about the suspects, the officials said.
Working with the Pentagon and the C.I.A., the command is preparing the dossiers as the first step in anticipation of possible orders from President Obama to take action against those determined to have played a role in the attack on a diplomatic mission in the eastern city of Benghazi that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three colleagues three weeks ago.
Potential military options could include drone strikes, Special Operations raids like the one that killed Osama bin Laden and joint missions with Libyan authorities.
But administration officials say no decisions have been made on any potential targets.
Spokesmen for the Defense Department and C.I.A. declined to comment.
The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that Abu Ahmad is suspected of a role in the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on September 11.

Many more detained for belonging to jihadist groups have been released from detention in the 18 months since President Hosni Mubarak was ousted -- and the activities of some are beginning to cause serious concern to Egyptian and Western intelligence agencies.
Muhammad Jamal Abu Ahmad, 48, was one of those released.

The U.S. government official who provided the email to ABC News – and wanted to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the matter – described the small DC-3 plane as an asset for a security team to more freely and safely move throughout the country, and to more easily transport arms and other security equipment. In short, having the plane allowed the security team to better perform its duties, the official said.
The State Department official acknowledged that the plane was used to get around Libya, not just to get in and out of the country.
But once commercial air service was re-established, the State Department decided that the SST didn’t need the plane anymore. The security team, it would seem, disagreed.

BENGHAZI, Libya — The commander of a powerful Libyan militia said Monday that looters had stolen “a large number” of shoulder-fired, heat-seeking missiles from the militia’s base when protesters who called for dismantling the country’s militias overran the compound.
ReplyDeleteIsmail Salabi, the commander of Rafallah al-Sahati, a powerful Islamist militia in Benghazi, said in an interview that the missiles, used by fighters to “hit airplanes” and known to the U.S. intelligence community as MANPADs, were stolen along with 2,000 semi-automatic rifles and ammunition, as the militia withdrew from its base amid a firefight early Saturday morning.

A senior Obama administration official said earlier this month that U.S. intelligence estimates that 100 to 1,000 MANPADS are still unaccounted for in Libya, despite U.S. efforts to destroy them. Intelligence officials believe that some of the MANPADS have been smuggled across Libya’s borders.
Glen Doherty, a former Navy SEAL and one of the Americans killed in the consulate attack, told ABC News last month that he had gone into Libya to track down MANPADS as a contractor for the State Department.

ReplyDeleteToday, a Defense Department official confirmed to Breitbart News that there is advance planning for a “substantial air package” against targets in Libya. Military sources suggest that this means that flight missions against Libyan targets will include manned flights, not merely drones.
The New York Times reported yesterday that the Obama administration is preparing an operation to “kill or capture militants” involved in the Benghazi attack resulting in the murder of our ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. According to the Times, the Joint Special Operations Command is putting together “so-called target packages of detailed information about the suspects.” These files are a coordinated project with the CIA and the Pentagon.
The Obama administration is under heavy scrutiny for its failure to protect the US consulate in Benghazi, and for its lack of security around the ambassador. Furthermore, the Obama administration is increasingly perceived as weak on terror, particularly in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, which has largely been hijacked by the well-organized Muslim Brotherhood. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to testify next Wednesday before the House Oversight Committee on the lack of security for the ambassador.

An officer with the military High Command in charge of Eastern Libya tells CBS News that Ansar al Sharia fighters - suspected by the U.S. and Libyan governments of carrying out the fatal attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi - have regrouped, and are camped out close to the eastern Libyan city.
ReplyDeleteThe militants were chased off their paramilitary bases in Benghazi and the city of Derna last month by angry crowds.
"They are in an area about 50 kilometers (about 30 miles) east of Benghazi," Col. Hamid Hassi tells CBS News. "The Defense Ministry and the Americans know where they are. Two weeks ago, there were drones flying over the area."
Asked whether he anticipates a strike against the fighters, the colonel warned against a unilateral American attack from the air.
"America and Libya should work together on catching the men who attacked the consulate," he said. "But if the Americans act alone it will cause huge resentment and could destabilize the whole region."

BENGHAZI, Libya — Face down on a roof inside the besieged American diplomatic compound, gunfire and flames crackling around them, the two young Libyan guards watched as several bearded men crept toward the ambassador's residence with semiautomatic weapons and grenades strapped to their chests.
ReplyDelete"We are finished," one of the guards says he remembers thinking.
Both are veterans of the ragtag revolutionary forces that toppled Moammar Kadafi. Over the last year, while assigned by their militia to help protect the U.S. mission in Benghazi, the pair had been drilled by American security personnel in using their weapons, securing entrances, climbing walls and waging hand-to-hand combat.
They were the "quick reaction force" for a compound that was also protected by about five armed Americans and five Libyan civilians hired through a British firm and equipped only with electric batons and handcuffs.
But nothing, they say, had prepared them for this. They had practiced for an attack by 10 or 15 people; now there were scores of professional-looking militants who moved methodically and used well-practiced hand signals.

Weapons did leave Libya, but it is unknown just what remained in country. Of particular importance are the 20,000 MANPADS of which today, only 5,000 have been recovered.
ReplyDeleteEnter the United States with a large purse of an allocated $40 million, to search for weapons and to buy-back in large numbers, while tracing and tracking the sources and associations of the groups. (To be sure, a few other countries did in fact donate much smaller dollars to support the mission.)
Transitional fighters and jihadis across the region have no loyalty to a country or flag, but only to their causes. They include AQIM, al Shabaab, AQAP, and Ansar al Sharia, to list only a few. The groups transit borders, from North Africa to Syria, with some number and variations of these weapons from Libya.
Since the removal of Qaddafi, Libya has no cohesive government in place and Benghazi is a perfect product of lawlessness and confusion.

Named: Al-Qaida men who killed ambassador http://zite.to/R0CpM2 Belhaj, brother of the Libyan AQ #2 whowas assassinated by US, the ringleader
ReplyDeleteWND is in receipt of a 270-page intelligence report in Arabic originating from Libya that names specific al-Qaida operatives in Libya as being responsible for the murder of U.S. Amb. Christopher Stevens.
http://www.wnd.com/2012/10/named-al-qaida-men-who-killed-ambassador/
After Gadhafi was deposed and murdered, the report documents Aqil applied his wealth to assisting Belhaj in supplying vehicles and military equipment for Libyan revolutionaries and al-Qaida terrorists opposed to the regime imposed on Libya by Obama, Hillary Clinton and NATO.
It is also common knowledge that the death of Stevens was a plot by al-Qaida, which vowed to revenge for a U.S. military drone attack that killed in Pakistan al-Qaida second-in-command Abu Yahya al-Libi,” Shoebat summarized.
“Indeed by killing Stevens, al-Qaida got its revenge. The tragedy is the Obama administration failed miserably to protect Stevens and the other three brave Americans killed in the terrorist attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi.”
“Abdul Hakim Belhaj, whose real name is Abdul Wahab Ghaid, also wanted revenge for the killing of his brother, Abu Yahya al-Libi the second man in Al-Qaida, who was killed in Pakistan,” Shoebat stressed.

Obama Throws Hillary Under The Bus – Clintons Furious
October 15, 2012 WASHINGTON — The Pentagon and State Department are speeding up efforts to help the Libyan government create a commando force to combat Islamic extremists like the ones who killed the American ambassador in Libya last month and to help counter the country’s fractious militias, according to internal government documents.
ReplyDeleteThe Obama administration quietly won Congress’s approval last month to shift about $8 million from Pentagon operations and counterterrorism aid budgeted for Pakistan to begin building an elite Libyan force over the next year that could ultimately number about 500 troops.
American Special Operations forces could conduct much of the training, as they have with counterterrorism forces in Pakistan and Yemen, American officials said.
The effort to establish the new unit was already under way before the assault that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans at the United States Mission in Benghazi, Libya. But the plan has taken on new urgency as the new government in Tripoli tries to assert control over the country’s militant factions.

CIA found militant links a day after Libya attack :
DeleteOct 25, 2012 During the seven weeks since the September attack that took the life of the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, it has become evident that Eastern Libya has become a base for al Qaeda militants who have seized a growing military and political role in western-supported regime change operations in Syria.
In addition, concerns are rising that Libyan MANPADs are a prize that al-Qaeda seeks, and the US appears to have lost control over thousands of these missiles. Of the estimated 20,000 once held by the Libyan armed forces, only about a quarter have been accounted for or destroyed, despite efforts of the U.S. and several countries to buy back or seize them after the revolution.
CNN confirmed yesterday that US intelligence has for the first time publicly acknowledged that some of the attackers belonged to the same al-Qaeda groups that the US fought in Iraq,
now a growing part of the Syrian opposition. http://security.blogs.cnn.com/...

The Obama administration’s lead investigator into the Benghazi attack, former Ambassador Thomas Pickering, previously held clandestine meetings with Hamas aimed at opening U.S. dialogue with the terrorist group, according to informed Middle Eastern security officials.
ReplyDeletePickering is further tied to the revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa through his role as a member of the small board of the International Crisis Group, or ICG, one of the main proponents of the international “Responsibility to Protect” doctrine.

According to multiple intelligence sources who have served in Benghazi, there were more than just Libyan militia members who were held and interrogated by CIA contractors at the CIA annex in the days prior to the attack.
Other prisoners from additional countries in Africa and the Middle East were brought to this location.
The Libya annex was the largest CIA station in North Africa, and two weeks prior to the attack, the CIA was preparing to shut it down.
Most prisoners, according to British and American intelligence sources, had been moved two weeks earlier.
Benghazi, September 11: CIA assets kill US envoy while CIA team is ordered to stand down and other CIA assets fail to intervene
ReplyDeleteThe Benghazi consulate was prevalently a CIA post, with significant military capabilities.
Ambassador Stevens had strong CIA connections and served as a liaison with the al-Qaeda-linked terrorists of the Benghazi-Derna-Tobruk corridor, whom the CIA is using for the attack on Syria.
His last conversation with a Turkish diplomat was evidently a discussion on this topic.
Stevens and others thought they had nothing to fear because their relations with the Islamist fighters were so cordial.
The attack that killed Stevens was carried out by forces under the control of Sufiyan Qumu (also Kumu or Gumu), who had been held in Guantanamo for several years and released as a CIA asset for the overthrow of Gaddafi.
A significant group of CIA paramilitaries stationed nearby was ordered to stand down by the CIA command structure.
Another CIA asset, the February 17 Martyrs Brigade, which had in the summer of 2011 assassinated General Younes in order to help the CIA operative General Hifter to take control of the rebel army, had contracted to provide additional security, but also did not intervene.
General Petraeus went to the movies that night. On September 14, Petraeus told the House Intelligence committee that the Benghazi incident had been spontaneous, a demonstration gone violent.
This is the line which Susan Rice mouthed on television in mid-September. (She should be fired for other reasons.)
The Obama administration was in any case eager to hide the fact that it had turned Libya over to al-Qaeda

Harzi was arrested in October in Turkey. He was reportedly en route to Syria to fight, undoubtedly under the al Nusrah Front's banner. The Tunisian government had previously arrested Harzi in 2005 or 2006 (the exact year isn't clear) for trying to make his way to Iraq to fight -- presumably for al Qaeda in Iraq.
ReplyDeleteThis is entirely consistent with a report by CNN in October ("US intel believes some Benghazi attackers tied to al Qaeda in Iraq"). CNN reported:
U.S. intelligence believes that assailants connected to al Qaeda in Iraq were among the core group that attacked the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, a U.S. government official told CNN.
...The latest intelligence suggests the core group of suspects from the first wave of the attack on the Benghazi mission numbered between 35 to 40. Around a dozen of the attackers are believed to be connected to either al Qaeda in Iraq or al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the government official said.
